Start dealing with anxiety provoking stimuli
    #11418024 - 11/09/09 11:05 AM (14 years, 4 months ago)

What happens when rational debate offends someone?  Why does everyone turn their head?

We need to start dealing with anxiety provoking stimulus instead of throwing down the argument of ignorance and say "its not for the classroom"

In the US black men are 7 times more likely to go to jail then white men (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12154123/)

However when this fact is interpreted its seen as "racist" and the head of ignorance digs its head back into the sand.  People need to start realizing reality, instead of ignoring it.  I think this is a great tragedy of western society.  This ability to just turn your head at the sight of something we don't want to see.  It's what we are doing to our planet, turning the head.  "We will deal with it later."  And it is our greatest downfall.  We need to teach or children to be polite, but we must also teach them reality... not this mass hallucination induced by culture.

How do you change a society to start dealing with anxiety provoking stimuli?  I think we must start teaching them to not be lazy, care about the weirdness, wonder about things.  Examine reality in an unbiased fashion void of its political, social, or economic value.  But its too late for that.

We are fucked beyond all repair.  People are too comfortable in ignorance.  Mine as well just hedonistically indulge in repetitive compulsive behavior feeding immediate gratification:shrug:

Great post

Examine reality in an unbiased fashion

However this seems almost impossible as we have created such an intimate relationsip with our minds that we think the mind is on our side
The mind is always biased, personal, individual, egoic...so we trust it
When our mind says 'dont listen to this' or 'this is just bullshit'
We trust it & follow it without even questioning further or examining in an unbias fashion

The mind will question anything, but ask it to question itself & it will run a mile!

After many years studying the situation with my huge genius logic I have to agree with your assessment of the situation.:satansmoking:

But all is not lost friend. You can continually improve your lot by questioning your own actions, working without attachment to change whatever doesn't work for you and remembering nothing will every be permanently fixed or perfect. And your ace in the hole is that you are not condemned to immortality.

Just facing 'black people are more likely to go to jail' doesn't really tell us much. There's a lot of information needed to adequately understand why this occurs. And even then, who could say that's all there is to it? I think we avoid the topic because it is preposterous to assume that everyone will a) listen to the facts objectively or b) adequately understand them

All that addressing this topic would realistically do, is spread the flame of prejudice. Many who get their hands on such information stop short of the whole picture and use the statistics to support their racism.

I don't find the withholding of this information to be a denial of the event... how can reality be denied? Does this denial somehow prevent it from occurring? I've had the topic discussed with me in great detail, and the fact that blacks are more likely to end up in jail is VERY uninformative without context.

What more do you want than to discuss the topic with individuals who are learning about the more holistic and contextual picture in which this occurs? There are individual differences in intelligence, cognitive functioning, attention, memory, biases, etc. What exactly are you expecting from people? You say that you want people to not be lazy... what exactly is being lazy? If you have half the intelligence and you perform half as well on a test, does that mean you were lazier than the person who scored twice as well as you? You know there is individual variance, and you know it effects how we act and react. Lazy... I don't even know what the term means outside of SOCIAL values.

I guess my question to you would be:
If you remove social, political, and economic factors... what creates a lazy person?

what creates a lazy person?

My best guess is early childhood environment where the child experiences failure followed by lack of support and encouragement and possibly a demand for impossible performance among other things like high levels of anxiety. (why bother, you can't win)

It is part of being human to be influenced by social values. Why would we want to disregard those? Because they have the potential to go astray? What makes this aspect negative, other than yet another social value process? Don't do this, instead do this. Sounds like a personal value which wants to be a social value if you ask me.

I've always found that society is reflective of evolution. It reflects what works/has worked for survival. Sure, we have the potential to be evolutionary fuck ups, but it is by no means a guarantee. On the contrary, so far it has allowed us to accomplish a tremendous amount. But, our level of language and social networking is unprecedented and we have nothing else to compare it to. Speculation of success or failure is premature IMO.

I don't think it's possible to teach someone something they don't want to learn.

Basically, we're fucked.

Imv, a worse statistic is that black on white violence is ten times white on black violence.  A statistic you won't see very much.

On the contrary, so far it has allowed us to accomplish a tremendous amount.

Except a general happiness with living.

About the rest you are correct.

I see. There is no possible way to respond other than through insult, but you want everyone else to change and be emotionally more mature.

Got it.
