Help me!!!
    #11337350 -

My friend is having trouble keeping his humidity at 100% or even above 80% for that matter.  I don't know what he's done wrong.  His perlite is wet and there is a nice thick layer in the chamber.  He even taped up about 15 holes on the chamber.  Wheres the moisture going??

Also the temp in the chamber is only 65-70 degrees.  What could happen if these conditions were to continue indefinately?  Any tips?  I posted some of his pics so all you pros here on the shroom board can take a peek.  Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Is that a digital hygrometer? If you have 3-4 inches of perlite your RH should be above 95.

try misting a few times to keep the rh high and if u have to run a cool or warm mist humidifier in the room . a warm mist could raise the room temp a little for you also. but cooler temps = less contams

its the gnome, hes stealing RH and selling it on the black market
you just cant trust them little guys:lol:

no but for real, are you fanning and misting?
misting will help replace any RH that was lost
also you can run a cool mist in the room to
raise the over all RH of the room your FC is in

Will the myc grow in ~65 degrees? Some keep their house cooler in Winter, like 55 or 60.

I don't understand the use of perlite.  It's just ceramic balls.  Only purpose would be to keep logs out of the water.  Might as well put rocks in there.

read some teks before you come in here and add nothing to a thread please...type in perlite in the search bar at the top right (or shotgun FC) it explains perlite there

for your problem, add a bit mroe perlite (1-2 more inches) and most importantly, elevate the FC
if it is sitting flat on a desk dont be surprised if your RH is low
air need to come up and evap water from the perlite to increase humidity

Perlite absorbs moisture and holds it in longer. It also is very porous which helps even more. 3-4 inches of perlite is the easiest way, by FAR, to keep humidity 95+.

Prefered temp is ~70 for fruiting. If you are going to alter the temp of your grow room you need to monitor it 24/7 for a few days till it gets steady. I made the mistake of going to sleep one night and woke up to a 90 degree room, all because of a water heater I set up, which worked fine for the 2 days before.

My tentative plan is to use a shotgun tub with grocery store turkey pans inside for a bulk grow. (double-tub)  I don't see why not just put water in the bottom of the tub for humidity?  It won't get in the turkey pans, and perlite should contribute nothing?

That's the best way to get your substrate contaminated. Search function, man, search function.

I think open water will be a contam playground.  Perlite is very porous and holds water for long periods of time, it is not porcelain or even close, it is a naturally occuring volcanic rock full of microscopic holes.  Porcelain is pressed and heated from a couple of diff things.  Do you have holes underneath the perlite so air rises from the bottom through the perlite?  What is the humidity like in the room in general?  My humidity gets low sometimes but as long as i mist my cakes fruit just fine.

I meant ceramic.  Since volcanic it's similar.

Well I meant sterilized rocks, but that's irrelevant, I was trying to understand.

So turkey pans would get my substrate contaminated.  OK, I will try to figure out why.  Oh yes, I'm a n00b, but I am studying every spare moment work allows me.  I'm doing the best I can.

Ten years ago I tried this hobby using the Mushroom Cultivator, and tried most grains and bulk substrates.  Almost universally I got good jar myc, no contam, and robust bulk grow-out, but never any pinning.  It would sit there until it shrivelled, even with high humidity.  With this forum I have hope that I can overcome that now.

hinderpits, seems like if boiled for 20 min there shouldn't be any organisms in the water, and it would be a much bigger reservoir than perlite.  Humidity is 80+ here in the Winter, but I'll keep the tub closed as much as possible.

Got the 23 gal from ContainerStore, and it seems perfect.  I'll cut some slots on the sides and tape on "vent filters" from Lowes, which are compact effective air filters made of non-biological material.

your making this too complicated. start small with some BRF cakes and listen to what the people of this forum have to say, they wont steer you in the wrong direction.

Theres a reason no one here uses open water as a source of humidity, it would be contam hell.  Sure it would be sterile after you boil it, but how long do you think it would stay sterile after you toss  it in your fc, and fan 4-5 times daily?  What happens to any open source of water that just sits in an open area?  Why do yoo think they add so many chemicals to pool water?  You could sterilize the pool water all you want, but after it sits out there, swimmers or not, it becomes a slew of contams and nasty shit.  I am no pro either, but my cakes turn out extremely well, so i do know a small bit about all this, and i apologize if i am coming off as a smartass, thats not my intent.  Also, i tried rye berries right off the bat, and had problems, i then mastered pf tek, and tried rye berries, and spawning to hpoo/straw with great success, so i agree that getting good at pf tek first is a generally a good idea.    I just think open water is a bad idea, as many experienced members of this site have directed me to avoid any open water in the fc.  Good luck with your research.

Thats why you need to gently mist your FC every 3 or 4 hours (if possible). You dont want any standing water in there though.

You can use those plastic meat trays from the store for bulk. Just wash an sanitize first. They work great!

Thanks hinderpits, you don't sound like a smartass, and I'm glad for any info.

LeopardMan, hmeh... perlite provides more surface area.  This makes sense.  This also implies that  it would dry out after a short while.  Someone mentioned using an airbubble stone with perlite.  This implies a layer of water in the perlite to keep it hydrated?  I'd rather not open my tub every day, or even every several days.

I've considered rockwool as well.  It would have the surface area.  Maybe I'll come across a thread where everyone shoots that down.

Even though it seems like a smart idea to not open it, you need constant FAE. Even with shotgun you should fan/mist 2-3 times daily. Just lightly fan, and if you want sterilize the air around it first just make sure whatever you are spraying completely settles before opening the container.

IMO rockwool = pot, perlite = mushroms. I guarantee 90% of this board uses perlite as a humidifier and we all have great results due to a great community.
