Hey shroomery,
I just recently got back into the game and i was wondering what kinds of alternatives there were to using perlite. It's just too messy and i really don't like to deal with it. I want to purchase an small aquarium for my cakes. What is a goot set up for that? Much advice is appreciated.

perlite too messy? whats so messy about it? i've done the whole humidifier thing and all it did was put me out $40, because it sucked so much. also its harder to regulate the humidity in my opinion. just get a jar some h202 and an air pump to get fresh air. but if you really wanna try th ehumidifier.. be my guest

You bought the wrong humidifier.
A cool mist humidifier and a timer...doesnt get any simpler that that.

search for geolite, it's the same stuff used in the hydropod and a few other contraptions I've seen pictures of. It is a bigger round porous rock that can be substituted for perlite and it is less messy. I'm not sure but it might require a different depth. It can be ordered online from hydroponic stores.

i know i did.. but a humidifier is a humidifier, you still have to deal with emptying the bottles when they fill up w/ water, it takes up more space, and its harder than perlit to control the humidity..

In reply to:

This is wrong. In reply to:

What bottles? What the heck kind of humidifier did you have?
Whos wants to have a bin full of wet sloppy perlite? You have to keep buying perlite too. Plus, with perlite, you have to fan manually several times a day.
With a humidifier and a timer it is EASY to control humidity and it also automatically takes care of all fresh air exchanges. No fanning or babysitting required. The only "work" involved is filling it up every few days and picking shrooms.
I know this because I've tried both.
Have you tried a vicks cool mist humidifier ShroominSpradl?

Just depends...
Watch your gauge and you'll figure out whats best for your situation. Its one of things you gotta work out for yourself. You may live in a humid climate and I may live in a dry climate. See what I mean?

Sorry it took a while for my reply but thanks for all of your input fellas. It helps a lot. I think i'm going to go with bassplayer's suggestion about the coolmist. I'm going to get one this weekend. All of your help is much appreciated. This forum is so great.

sorry bassplayer i was unaware that with the cool mist humidifier you didn't use bottles to cut down the moisture in the humidity. my first set up used a ultrasonic humidifier and 2L. soda bottles via the MMGG (http://www.erowid.org/plants/mushrooms/mushrooms_mmgg.shtml).. still i've only bought one bag of perlite and never found any reason to change it or buy more and an air pump and some h202 takes care of the fresh air exchange... its 100% self sufficient..

Whatever you think is best then go for it.
I just think that a cool mist with a hose running into the terrarium is a lot simpler. Nothing to buy ever after the initial 25 bucks for the humidifier.
I cant believe you've never changed your perlite. How long you been growing? Do you have contamination problems? It is recommended that you change it once in a while you know?
I bet if you tried a cool mist you'd never go back to perlite.
BTW, Anno uses a vicks cool mist too.
