broken perlite?

I'm using perlite to humidify my chamber. And the last few days its been working really well. Moisture all over the sides and everything within an hour.

Now today I fanned it and its just not doing anything.. Does perlite go off?

Perlite by itself doesen't do anything but sit there like.. a rock. :wink:

It's job is to both wick the water in the bottom of your chamber to the surface and to provide surface area to evaporate that water into the atmosphere of your chamber.

Did you run dry?

nah, but I stirred it up a lot. Maybe the top is over saturated atm. I'll leave it a while and see what happens.

Maybe it will be okay even if I cant see it on the sides as I am doing casings anyhow.

in the room? no its really quite warm in here today. Could also be why its not condensing as much or some such.

just asking because water temp lowering can cause it to drop RH. I'd try lowering the water level. You can use a towel and soak up some water after you move some perlite around.

I've heard people having problems with perlite before, but not too many solutions...

Panic over problem sorted.

Addition to perlite knowledge. Wet perlite is shite. Not even soaked, just wet.
I took the top layer off. Left 1/2" of perlite full full of water (like visible on top.) Microwaved top layer so water evaporated out and spread it back on top dry. Mist again woop!

I think I'll lay it out like that from the beginning next time, its a shit load easier than poking your fingers in it to see the water level.

Perlite humidification isn't meant to automate your yub just keep the RH factor more stable. Water/h2o2 at half the depth of the perlite is optimum IMO. You can place a clear juice glass in the corner of the bin before filling with perlite that way you can just look in the glass and see your water level at a glance. :wink: GL
