If you are using perlite, you won't need the humidifier and vice versa. The straw will fruit if just spread out on perlite. You'll notice that the fruits were extremely fat, but not overly plentiful. The straw was not broken up much before being placed in the fruiting chamber. Perhaps if it were more even, it would have fruited more evenly.

Thanks for the advice and the beautiful pictures! Well done! My friend will now be able to dream about how to neatly arrange the hay and set up the humidifier.
