If you just have young specimens it's okay to eat some raw. They supposedly taste pretty good when raw.

PS: I picked some last year and cooked them up. Didn't try them raw then but it's a very interesting mushroom with an interesting taste. They are pretty fragile though. So be careful when cooking and/or cutting them.

I heard these might be toxic when mixed with alcohol. Dont know if cooking them changes that or not.

i had the same concern but its a different species of coprinus that reacts with alcohol. the common inky cap? i believe. did not try them raw by the way. ended up just sauteeing them all before i saw these posts. thanks for all the help and concern everybody.

Cheers

That's right. I believe that the coprinus that reacts with etoh is like the shaggy without the shaggy.

How were they btw? I just got done mowing my leaves and destroyed about 13 shaggys. Am I missing anything?

The alcohol thing is for a cousin of Coprinus Comatus.
