Shaggy mane: Outdoor fruitings?
    #1380053 -

I live in southern cali, i'm hoping to start a shaggy mane patch. I think my best route for this would be some garden planter boxes filled with compost ( i have a source for good horse manure/wood chips/urea/straw compost) to about 5 inches deep - spawn that and wait?

Or should I dig a hole? any suggestions would be much appreciated. I've never made outdoor patches before, due to my climate not being very good for mushrooms.

I will also be trying to fruit them indoors, and will share my results when I finish.

From Mushworld:
"Coprinus comatus is grown on the same substrate as button mushroom, and it needs casing. "
Hum.. in that case, maybe you could try mimic an agaricus bisporus patch (if there is one).

I've found, last year, some shaggy manes growing on my neighbour's lawn, near a poplar.

I would innoculate an outdoor manure/compost patch 5-8" deep with 2-3 one QT jars of spawn and cover with an inch or two of compost and scatter grass seed over it.

A planter would probably work, although water drainage could be a problem. I'd dig a 5'x5'x8" patch though.

It sounds like the planter should work. I would maybe also suggest planting some grass seed. It will shade the substrate and keep the humidity higher. Good luck.

Listen! Do you smell something?

Ive found these growing in straight garden wastes - can anyone describe the taste? And how long can you not drink after consuming?

>can anyone describe the taste?
Mild, mushroomy, very pleasant.

>And how long can you not drink after consuming?

C. commatus is not reported to cause troubles when consumed with alcohol.
Some other Coprinus species are.

Anno, have you grown these indoors by chance?
