Using "garden" compost for blewit and/or Shaggy mane
    #1965629 -

I have a good supply of for lack of a better description garden compost. It is made of grass clippings, old food (not meat) scraps, leaves, coffee grounds and such in one of those barrel type composters. What comes out looks like a very dark, rich soil. I've heard of using composted manure for various mushrooms, am wondering about "garden" compost.
I have a bag of blewit spawn ready to go, am now trying to decide what sort of substrait to use outdoors. Leaves, compost, sawdust, muxture - anyone have any ideas?

Second question - Coprinus Commatus - anyone tried it on "garden" compost? I'm thinking of growing out a spawn bag and making a Shag bed (ahem, meaning mushrooms baby). Thinking mainly garden compost + a bag of steer manure from the store and probably seed it with grass for over wintering.

Comments, suggestions, anyone having luck with blewit (Clitocybe nuda) or shaggy mane (Coprinus Commatus) please pass along wisdom!

Hmm, well looks like no one has tried it. I shall then try the stuff out and report back so next time there will be answers! Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Good luck, let us know what happens. Oh, and I believe especially coprinous comatus (not sure about the other species) seems to prefer substrate with rather high levels of nitrogen.

I have a crate of Shaggy mane on garden compost, spawned with
2 pints of grain, so far nothing to report.

You need to define medicinal. Shiitake is quite tasty AND has great medicinal properties too (lower blood pressure, lower colesterol come to mind). If you consider it medicinal then I'd say it's one of the easier ones to grow.
For a purely medicinal type then Reishi (polyporus ?) is quite easy also.
I think THE easiest mushroom of all - medicinal or other - is the Oyster. One can start an Oyster "farm" from fresh store bought ones pretty easily and it is aggressive enough to out race many contaminants or just "eat" them along with their substrait.

Blewit patch spawned on 10/4 in a mixture of compost, old leaves, old grass clippings, a few wood chips (alder) and topped over with bark dust to keep moisture in. I theory being October it should start raining here soon so the barkdust is probably irrelivant.
NO idea what if anything will happen, but I expect if anything does it will be next fall/winter.

shaggy manes grow well on just about anything other than straight wood. i recomend that you use non-digested compostables, rather than stuff that came out of an anerobic composter. they are a good idiot -proof mushroom both in cultivation and identification

Werecat, your icon looks like the old anno icon. It's rad, may I ask what that is from? looks almost like a fantasy game type picture.. ala d&d.

  I resemble that remark!  I've grown shags inside on composted cow poo (using old refridgerator) and they do grow in very rich lawn soil.  I think they are prone to like hi nitrogen, though not as much as the alcohol inky which I've grown too just for the heck of it (I forget the latin name).  I'm just trying to establish several edibles outside here and there.

As for the icon -   I don't remember where I found it at.  I'll try to remember though.
