Shaggy mane LC ?

I was in a wedding yesterday and when we were getin your pics taken i saw a bunch of shaggy manes growing. Im going to pick some today and take some cultures.

I want to try this lc tek http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/5874305/page/0/fpart/1/vc/1 but im worried because they are growing outside. If i use the top of the stock on a young mushroom it should be clean? The part of the stock that has the cap closed around it.

Is there a way to get a clean print?

You could just cut a bit of the flesh out - that way it has not been exposed to the air, but it sounds like the inside of the cap would be the same idea.

This is wild, I just put some shaggy mane into LC this weekend and thought the whole idea was a little crazy. My story begins in that I had some LC made of light malt extract, gypsum and alder sawdust sitting around. On Friday I found a nice young shaggy mane and got all excited because I've wanted to seed my entire yard with this for about a year (I irrigate it, can't I get something edible out of it?). So I took the young cap and tore it into thirds and was praying I could make a spore print from them. Sure enough before the caps completely went to goo I got two okay prints out of it. Now I had a glob of half shaggy mane goo and half cap left over, so I crudely dropped it into 250ml of LC culture I had lying around. Honestly I just want to seed my lawn, and if I can get a bunch of spores to start germinating in the LC I'll inoculate a couple spots in my yard. Contaminants will no doubt be an issue, but I simply want all the leftover spores to germinate and they should have a competitive advantage in numbers. Once the culture looks fully colonized or contams start to get a foothold I'll dump it and pray for some tasties next year.

If I was to make LC just for Shaggy mane I would follow my recipe by substitute the alder dust for soil since shaggy mane lives in that environment. Taking inner tissue straight to LC in a sterile environment should be possible, but personally I would put inner tissue onto a plate, and once that has good growth take a piece to LC to decrease the odds of getting a contaminant.

Any luck with your LC? A quick update on mine. I let it sit for four days, after which it started fermenting (yeast contam?). Since I just wanted to make an outdoor inoculation I dumped my 250ml of LC into a quart jar of grain spawn and let it sit one day. Then last night I went out dug a hole in my yard, dumped in the grain spawn, sprinkled on a little dirt, added about 1-2 cups of dried cow manure and put a couple of inches of dirt over it all. I then mulched with a couple of inches of grass and watered the heck out of it. It's in a spot in my yard that is shaded but gets a lot of water from irrigation, so I'm hoping to see something next year. I'll post if I do (and remember, heh).

I did the jars up on the 25th. 2 karo and 2 honey. I dont see any mycelium growing yet. Update when i do.
