My Nephew's Outdoor Shaggy Mane Project

I tried for two months to get these to fruit indoors, and they just wouldn't. Finally, a bit of trichoderma was starting to show up on the casing material, so I gave the block to my nephew and suggested he go bury it in the yard somewhere.
Long story made short, Roadkill was visiting and went outside to smoke a cigarette, then came back in saying "You have to come see this!" He found this patch growing right where Junior buried the block only one month earlier. I thought it was pretty amazing considering the temperature got down to 18F two weeks ago. RR

It's funny how I went outside to smoke a cigarette and found them... I thought they were wild until RR and his nephew told me they had put some out in the yard... they didn't know they had popped up yet.

Yup, those are the ones you found roadz...lol
Actually, we didn't pick them. I suggested he just let them go to spores and allow the bugs, slugs, and birds to have them. This way they'll spread out more and give a bigger patch next year. I'll give him some horse manure and Alder chips to mix into the soil next time I go over there. RR

It's funny that you mentioned dog shit with shaggy manes. A month or so ago I made up a crude quart of shaggy mane spawn and buried it in my yard. I did have a little bit of cow manure available, but looking around my yard I saw tons of dog shit and threw some of that in the hole as well.
I don't have terribly high hopes for my spot, but we'll see...

When you guys cultivate shaggies do you clone them? I was wondering if the section taken from the mushroom for cloning will eventually deliquesce like the gill tissue.

I'm wondering the same thing.
I found some Shaggy mane this year and wanted to clone them.
Whats the best area to clone from?

If you pick them young, the whole inside is fine to use. RR

I believe this is a good example to understand how much is important to "copy" the natural environment of the mushrooms.
