shaggy mane?

i ahve found what i believe is shaggy mane in my gf parents back yard, i picked them and refrigerated. i also asked the parents if they had seen these before and they said they pop up all the time. my question is.. is there any other poisoness mushrooms that would look like a shaggy mane. is there any reason i should not eat these? thanks ever y one for looking

there are no look-a-likes to my knowledge, take a picture of the ones you found if ya can, and get someone to ID it

yes, shaggy manes can roughly pass for a lepiota which are poisonus

Well, shaggymanes will turn black liquidy if you leave them a few days. That's a good way to know it's a coprinus (the scientific name of the genus). often pop up near driveways and other disturbed areas.

Shaggymanes aren't good to eat if they're at all soft, they have to be very fresh. Also don't drink alcohol with them, at least not at first. they tend to react badly with alcohol.

yeah, if you are going to eat any, eat them when they are very young, If you look at the bottom of the cap and see a lot of black almost ink looking stuff on it, it is too old and will not taste good.

When i find them, I usually pick them b4 the cap starts to open.

They are also found a lot in forest preserves near walking paths with very fine gravel. I find a ton just walking around my local preserve...some get very large.

they are a fairly delicate mushroom....don't know if you'd be able to grill them and keep them intact.

I usually cut them up and fry them in some butter with onions and garlic. Then used as hamburger topping.

I have also used them in soups.

yum, i've seen a lot of shaggy manes popping up around my area the last few weeks, perhaps tomorrow i'll cook some up to top off my hamburger, sounds tasty.

yeah, they are good, just make sure to pick the ones where the cap hasn't started to open yet.

Those are less fragile and taste a whole lot better.

Just make sure you don't drink alcohol for at least a day after eating them. It won't kill you, but can give you an upset stomach.

I prefer nailing a couple of them them on a stick an roast them on a fire. Put some salt on and you feel the pure muhsroom taste and this is a delicious one, no spices and addons to asimilate the mushroom taste.

First verify if they are really Shaggy Manes - Coprinus Comatus - send a description to the mushroom ID forum http://www.shroomery.org/forums/postlist.php/Cat/0/Board/mushID.

When anyone says you can't drink alcohol with shaggy manes they're wrong.... you cannot mix alcohol with Coprinus atramentarius, with Coprinus Comatus is OK.

You are correct....I was confusing them with the Alcohol Inky "warning"....shaggy are fine with alcohol.
