Selecting A Clone? - TC's, exp. cultivators, etc. please
    #11306658 - 10/23/09 02:36 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

weve got this tray pinning.

looks like a nice (i dont know what youd call a fruiting substrate in its entirety...like its "living" name) healthy candidate for grabbing a clone from.

im not looking for BIGGEST growth, of FASTEST

im not looking for a tiny cluster of 50 boomers

im looking sort of in the middle. a larger, semi fast growing, pair, or triplet

am i on the right track? i guess its all depending on what im after.

i just havent cloned off these GC yet, and would like a clone culture

heres the tray:

ive got a candidate or two in mind, but id like to hear what you guys/gals think. and why.

Mahalo!
Aloha :sun:

why wouldn't you want to clone the largest and fastest grower?

Bottom right corner of the pic expand to actual size.
The big one you are speaking of was my sixth choice,  just because if you are looking for a couple or cluster you want the shrooms to be close in size.

Unless you see a mushroom with qualities you immediately want to reproduce (size, shape, color, speed of growth, potency, etc.) you're better off picking a pin from a cluster. You can drop that pin onto agar and clone it, as the mycelium is growing at a rapid pace (mushroom pins double in size every 24 hours) and will outpace any contaminants. Easy to isolate.

Exactly like -Brennus- said take a pin as an isolate...Some people will clone a mature fruit due to it's size or color but you are not guaranteed potency until you sample said clone...If you seek an Isolate of the Sub-strain pins are the way too go!!!

ok, I see the numbers now.

I still would go with number 6.  and I am speaking from inexperience.. so..

group 6 looks nice.  maybe its the light maybe its the angle they are to the camera; but, #6 looks not as dark in the caps. maybe they like their growing environment a little better, and also all three of their stems look happy

In my thinking if you want to make a master culture you should take one pin from each of the six sites.  When you grow them out you can choose witch one to keep and witch ones to throw out.  Only cloning one pin is not a good way to go.  Label them 1-6...

I agree. They have seem to have good qualities. I would grow them all out on the same conditions to see which one (or two) performed best to the desired traits in mind. I would take multiple samples of each personally.

I guess the number of starting samples depends on how many petri dishes you got.

essentially isolating is going to grow out like branches on a tree, and each starting sample exponentially raises the number of petri's needed in the end.  The same with the number of strains to grow out..

I think.. :confused2:

Even so, you're still not guaranteed potency by cloning a pin. The only way to tell potency would be to clone each fruit, label, test each fruit separately, and keep the best clones.

Also you may not get the traits you seek because with a pin theres no real way to tell. I mean you might have a good idea by it's looks but it still a guess. You may even end up with a mutant.  :imo:

Honesty, what the best way to determine potency. I don't trip don't very often (it's been a year and half). After years of heavy use, I am down to minimal use. How much do you eat to use a scale to their potency? Would just eat an X amount this week and X an amount of a different iso every week to compare all the potency(s).? Basically giving it just enough to time to get rid of the small tolerance and then dose the same amount again and which ever one got you closest to "space" would be your top candidate? I dunno, this has been something I have thought about lately.

I want to test every iso but I don't want to have to trip every time I do it. I just get waay to fucked up when I eat > 2g.

i dont have choke petris right now.

oooooh, i wanna write up a tek for some fancy reuseable petris, got a good one.

im going to take 2 from #2, and 2 from #1

watching the difference in growth in pins is fun. some start out huge, fast, aggressive, and peter out. some are insignificant, and end up out growing the early bloomers...
