cloning..... over and over and over again
    #1031411 -

OK, if i clone the biggest mushroom from a flush, then grow it up and clone the biggest shroom from that flush and keep doing this for years, would I eventually end up with a seriously massive shroom? kind of like that mendel guy with the peas.

In reply to:

The reports you hear of continued cloning resulting in mutation are reports from commercial growers. The range of mutation and strain degradation is around 1000 generations before you start seeing it. Think about how long a home cultivator would take to run out 1000 generations. You are not likely to have a problem with strain degradation in your lifetime

to better isolate and 'evolve' or select a strain you would grow, print, clone, grow, print, clone, each time selecting better fruiters and colonizers ect

Mendel did selection after sexual propagation.
If you clone it all the time, you don?t have any recombination of genes by sexual means.

Anno, I apologise for my lack of knowledge about the asexual? reproduction of fungi, but i was wondering. . .
If i took clones of the biggest shrooms from two seperate prints and put them togeather on a agar plate, would any sort of genetic 'mixing' occur where their mycelia met?

Sorry for asking stupid questions, but my small brain has difficulty comprehending complex theories such as sexual reproduction, more so now since i intially started this post as I electricuited myself with 240V about 10 minutes ago.

you could clone the best strain unless you felt you wanted to refine again in which case you'd go back to the print board (pun)

Spores germinate into monokaryons.. monokaryons mate to form dikaryons.
Mushroom tissue is already composed of dikaryons so no, you couldn't mate two clones.
The only way to mate is if you bring together individual monokaryons. This is pretty hard.. usually achieved by diluting spore solution many times and germinating on agar.

Volts have nothing to do with the matter. I've been shocked by 10000 volts. I was more supprised than anything. It's the amps which will kill you.
