sawdust as casing?
    #1126090 - 12/09/02 06:43 PM (21 years, 3 months ago)

I'm all out of coir, and incidentally, money:crazy:. I'm not too fond of peat or verm as casings, and was wondering if sawdust would work well as a casing?
I know the wood won't provide any nutrients, which is a good thing, as far as a coir substitute goes, but I'm not sure if softwood sawdust will inhibit mycelial growth. I know softwood is a no-no for most species of woodlovers as a substrate, but do you think cube mycelium will still penetrate it, as it does with coir, or will resins and/or oils prevent even the permeation of mycelium, regardless of whether it's trying to metabolise the wood or not?

I think as you`ve suggested, the oils and resins will play a major part in preventing a good flush from comign through.
I resently burtn my casing with too much Lime.
I would imagine a similar casing imbalance would result in very irregular flushes.

verm is nasty and clingy and just irritates me.
peatmoss supports contams a lot more easily than coir (O blessed coir!)
and there's the whole pH thingy to worry about...
In the name of science, and for the benefit of my fellow AdvCultItes I suppose I'll give the sawdust a go. Give it a good boil/steep first and that.
Oh, if only I lived in a world where hardwoods were available....

Verm is the devil.
