it seems i see a lot of folks lately that advocate forgoing the bottom casing layer and casing just the top. is there a reason for this? i can't imagine a bottom casing layer can be detrimental in any way.
is there a valid argument for this tactic?

yes, the mushroom industry doesn't use the bottom layer in fact there's no need of it, shrooms grow anyways.... this doesn't means that is detrimental, is just useless (IMO). peace

by "useless," you mean that it's not beneficial even in the slightest? i always figured that it added a lot more moisture that the mycelium would have access to.
are there any knowledgeable folks out there that argue for using a bottom casing layer? i'm just curious what the local 'blue thumbs' are doing, because i honestly never heard of omitting the bottom casing layer until just recently.
you guys are my knowledge base!

There is one reson for a bottom casing layer: somtimes whan you water your casing too much, the water stalls at the bottom of the casing container. This water is an ideal breeding ground for bacteria. To prevent this, a dry vermiculite layer at the bottom is beneficial.
