Warning About Deadly Psi. Cyanescens Lookalikes
    #11270970 - 10/18/09 12:01 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

This is just a quick public service announcement - there are cyan lookalikes out there that you should be aware of. These are in the galerina genus and should be considered armed and dangerous. They were found in the same general area as some small patches of cyans.

Noobs - make sure you're posting your pics on here before eating anything. These look very similar to the untrained eye and are very deadly. There are also other lookalikes, so please be careful. Toxic mushroom poisoning is not a pleasant way to die.

:rofl2:

shit thanks for the info - i should have known better than to listen to mjshroomers advice. that's funny, i didn't think those were galerinas but i'm not in the habit of questioning his opinions on shrooms.

but there are still deadly lookalikes out there, so be careful guys

Well, mjshroomers advice is the same advice you're giving.  He just had the wrong mushroom apparently.  We could post some other pics that correspond to this topic.

oh well the point remains the same - be careful out there. noobs can easily make mistakes when it comes to IDing cyans. yeah MJ was trying to give the same advice but seeing as how he's a mycopro and has written books on the subject i figured he'd be more reliable in his ID.

there's an idea. i'm leaving for a hunt soon but will definitely post more lookalike pics here when i get back. if anyone else can contribute some good pics, please do.

once you find a couple cyan patches IDing them gets pretty easy for most people. but i really worry about those noobs... at least once a day i come across someone on this site that decided to taste test unidentified mushrooms.

You should question everyones opinion on shrooms.  Especially when the person is more than three times your age...

and batshit crazy.

The last time mj posted Galerina it was Tubaria, CC mentioned it to him and he got really really mad.

I disagree with a large percentage of his ID's.

He used to become furious and argue but now he just accepts it.

I am not saying he is right or wrong.  Just saying.

I'm headed out myself.  I'm in OH so never seen a cyan, but here's this fairly common one from PMotW:

Sorry about the quality.  I just nabbed it on google.  Maybe it'll get the ball rolling. *EDIT: CRAP, that's P. stuntzii!! Ah well...

For those of us in the east (this is off topic, please pardon it), here's an awesome shot by wiscokid of Gym. Luteus and gals.  They're considerably different, but you never know...

Happy Hunting!

Ya I went hunting in an area that a friend of mine told me was booming yesterday (knew he didn't really know shit about shrooms) and only found look-a-likes (mostly galerinas I believe.) Spent 3 hours hunting every nook and cranny and he had told me to go off the beaten path, which I had numerous times only to be lead to Galerinas. So while talking to him I told him that what he had were most likely look a likes and he maintained he had Psilocybe cyanescens so I said, well are they bruising blue, to which he would reply no, but yet he maintained there ARE some types of cyans that don't bruise blue.

I got so frustrated where normally I would just let it be because I knew he would try to eat these and am actually quite scared for him.

EDIT: But in any case does anyone know of any non-bruising blue cyan? I know I've never read anything and believe it's an essential identification characteristic but another friend says he's read of some that don't. Also...love that smiley->:humpme:

every cyan i find bruises blue. and then the stem turns greyish-blue. do you remember what it was growing out of? have your friend do a spore print - call him and explain the process. if you don't think they were cyans they probably weren't. can he email you a photo?

Here are some Psilocybe sp images I first posted in 2006, I knew without a doubt it was an active species but no matter what I said MJ was certain it was an inactive species, even with the obvious blue oxidization!

Everyone gets it wrong sometimes!

It is a species I first started finding in 2005 in a plant nursery I worked at, look back on my old posts and you will find many more including another interesting active species that may be P. makarorae, the above species is close to if not P. moravica var moravica.

Haha, I think you would need a special license to send or receive plants over seas!
They have been sampled in the past and there is no doubt it is an active species, I am not really interested in the affects of these mushrooms anymore and am more interested in the study of fungi, I guess most people here just want to trip, the dried specimens are stored in a personal herbarium.
Sorry for derailing your thread minerva, I'll stop now.

I only spoke with him on the phone, couldn't get him to message me a picture, but a buddy of mine (who I know the picker through) had seen them and described them to me, that's when I got red flags.

I haven't been able to get a hold of him (hell, I don't even have his number) but I told my buddy to pass on the word to him next time he sees him.

So many pronouns, fucking animosity haha
