Quick question...are there any deadly lookalikes of Baeo's?
    #2032230 - 10/22/03 01:47 PM (13 years, 11 months ago)

A friend is curious before he consumes the Baeo's I found a week ago. I am 100% positive that they are Baeo's, and he just wants to know for peace of mind.

Thanks all.

It depends a lot on how good your identification skills are.

There have been numerous cases of people mistaking Chlorophyllum molybdites for Psilocybe cubensis. That one is pretty tough for me to imagine. About the only thing they have in common to my eyes is that they both have a central stem, gills, cap, and ring on the stem. Yet it happens again and again.

Did you make a spore print (it should be on white paper for identification purposes)?

Do they bruise properly (make sure that when you look for blue that you're actually seeing blue, not just a darkening)?

Can you list the key features that would distinguish your "baeos" from any other mushroom?

An important mistake to avoid is using photographs as your primary means of identification. You need to know what features in the photograph to compare to your specimens before that becomes useful. Even then, it's not as useful as most beginners seem to think.

The most dangerous mushrooms you're likely to mistake for a Psilocybe are members of the genus Galerina. Do you know how to identify one of them? If not, it would be a good idea to learn. Then you could at least be sure you weren't mistaking that deadly mushroom for something else.

There aren't that many kinds of deadly mushrooms. It's a good idea for anybody who intends to eat wild mushrooms they find to learn all the deadly mushrooms. That way you can be sure you're not eating anything like any of them.

Happy mushrooming!

Baeo's bruise blue quite intense. You should be able to tell if its bruising blue or not.

Here is a page of bluing baeocystis shrooms for id as to their bluing.
They lose over half or more of their potency in drying. Always.

anyway this should help you. They also have pleats in the caps like dresses do and very white stems which stain blue. The cap gets straw-yellowish with tinges of blue, green and gold.

I am quite confident that they are baeo's, already posted the find a week or so ago.

...again...they are baeo's. Just wondering what common lookalikes are out there that resemble baeos...
