Who says you can’t grow Rye cakes like BRF!

Here are a few just starting to fruit for me. So far it seems to have been about humidity.

But again, these are tiny experimental cakes, also they were dunked and rolled if you haven’t figured that out yet by the pics.

I went to bed last night after misting and woke up this morning to this… Well camouflaged but they are there. :smile:

Another experiment…. It seems these days I am doing more experimental things then actually trying for harvests.

Here was a fun one. I made 6 of these tiny, 4oz, rye berry jars; typical rye recipe for casing or G2G.

But I turned them into little cakes to see how well I could fruit them. Someone here said it wouldn’t work very well. Hmmmmm. What I learned was that with a lot of direct watering, meaning 6-8 direct sprays of distilled water directly onto the center of the cakes three or four times a day I got some nice results.

Remember these cakes are pretty small.

Two different strains, 3 cakes each. Brazil and Burma.

It was an experiment so there are two cakes that didn't do so well. When I didn't spray the cakes directly in the center with 6-8 sprays three or four times a day the cakes did not do as well. This was first flush so we'll see.

I will dunk and maybe re-roll tonight.

Sweeet. Those would be cool to do on the stealth, if you needed to go that route.

I used to live in Chicago. I miss it. Especially NW Indiana this time of year.

Cool idea, I never thought about that! Maybe I will try another run and figure some stealth method; maybe in a can in the pantry with a little LED light on a timer of some sort. :strokebeard:

It is a great area. I love far enough away to get away fomr the traffic but close enough to enjoy all the city has to offer. I also have visited the North East Indiana area quite a bit. Blue Berry picking, fishing on the lake, the beaches, Michigan City, etc... It's a great area too!

awe.. lol. i fruited wbs as tiny cakes before.. only thing is they dont retain moisture so good.. but it looks like u got some awesome results

I'm pretty sure it is the direct spraying of water (6-8 sprays) into or onto the center of the cakes 3 or 4 times a day. On a couple others where I just tried to keep up the RH they didn’t do so well.

So they worked but a lot of water every day. The dunk and roll was tricky too. They came out pretty soft after the dunk and I rolled them twice, once in fine verm once in course verm. I felt that would help hold them together. That also seems to have helped.

Second flush, even with watering turned up tiny. only about 25g fresh.

I think I'm done with this experiment and will break up the "Rye Berry Cakes" into some of my favorite mini-casings. Do you think they will still work if incorporated into a new casing mix? Or is the myc tired and retired...
