A post requesting help finding Tyvek prompted me to write this up. It's absolutely nothing groundbreaking, but it works wonders for me and it's very simple. I haven't lost one single jar to contams since I've used this method, and i've finished probably close to 50 jars.

I use Tyvek envelopes from Staples. You should be able to get the equivalent at any major office supply store.


Start by opening the envelopes up so you can work with the entire surface.


Should end up looking like this.


Next, take a jar lid and use it to stencil your Tyvek.


I use a Sharpie.


When you're finished you have enough filters for a case (12) of jars.


Carefully cut out each filter, trying to cut just inside the marker. Leave most of the ink on the scrap Tyvek, like so.


I use pretty standard lids. One large hole for gas exchange, one small for inoculation.


The metal lid goes on first.


Then the Tyvek filter, and ring. Nice and clean, nothing sticking out the sides, but sealed well.


After sterilizing, tighten the lids, and hold the jars over a light source so you can mark the inoculation hole.


Here is a finished jar, inoculated in a glovebox (not entirely necessary but nice for reassurance) and the hole covered with micropore tape. I've used small band aids too, it's all the same really.

And alas, the end result a while later...



I know $30.00 may seem steep, but I didn't want to steal from the USPS, and I like that they are all white. The entire case was 50 envelopes, so that's 600 jars. Not bad at all in my opinion. Many people say you need more than one layer of Tyvek, but like I said; I haven't had one jar go south since I've used this method. Just follow clean inoculation procedure and it's ace!

Tyvek is free at the post office.

If you put your hole in the dead center of the lid then you can also put an RTV inoculation point in the dead center of the tyvek disk. You could put an extra hole in the lid wherever you want too if you want.

Just wipe your inoc point with alcohol, flame sterilize, and inoculate. NO need for micropore tape EVER again.

i'm aware of the availability of free Tyvek. I went over my reasoning for buying a pack. god forbid anyone splurge $30.00 on their hobby

Let’s see … you’re growing illegal mushrooms to begin with. Is this a crime? Well … let’s not go there. Instead we’ll nitpick about how one obtains a little bit of tyvek … which is FREE to begin with. The FACT that you are not using them for mailing shit is not the point. No one gives a shit. Just think about the TRILLIONS of dollars that our US government ‘loses’ EVERY single year and refuses to be held accountable for. Now … ask me now if I give a shit about a piece of tyvek. Give me a break.

as stated above, this tek was a response to a thread earlier where the poster could not find tyvek, even at the post office. this is what i use, this is what works for me, i figured it may help some other people out too. if you get your free tyvek from the post office and use silicone etc. that's all gravy in my book, but there's no need to come in here gun's blazing. by the way, this method for jars is not exclusive to illegal mushrooms. it works for the legal type too  :rolleyes:

it's irrelevant whether it's a federal business or not.

the fact of the matter is they give it to you for free.
if you ask someone if you may have something, and they say yes, that is not stealing.

but, i am not here trying to cause more waves, if someone does not feel comfortable taking the tyvek from the po, and they feel that spending a little extra money on some tyvek that is just as easily acquired is the right thing to do....so be it.

LoL that is what I use I do pretty much the same thing is you but the envelopes are huge so I don't open them up like you.  I can get 12 on the envelope without opening so basically it doubles cause it is two sided.  So I get 24 filters per envelope.

Best deal on tvek I've encountered.....


13 bucks for a 12x10 sheet - here it is folded in half.


It's one of those sheets you put over your plants on cold nights so the plants don't freeze.
