 What are rye berries???

What are rye berries? Why would someone user them as opposed to whole grain rye flour?
I am planning to set up some quart jars this weekend... would it be better to go for rye only or to try mixing up some Alien Tek substrate?

I'm pretty sure that a reference rye berries is the same as rye grain. could be wrong though.

Read the whole grain section. Rye berries = rye = rye kernals = rye grains etc. etc. It is a great, semi-bulk shakable substrate that has the ability to colonize very fast when spawed with fresh mycelium. It is best to start off with pint jars, but, you can work your way to quarts. Make sure your casing tek. is up to standards.

He also mentioned that he could be wrong, which wasn't a definite answer to my specific question.

I wouldn't call it 'well-covered' either. There is a vague supposition that different teks work better for different people depending on different circumstances... for example:
"Usually some recipes will work better for one and the others for another. The key is to get the water amount as high as possible but on the other hand obtain a shakeable substrate, meaning not too many exploded kernels. A little trial and error will lead you to "your" tek."
There is nothing in this that compares the Alien Tek substrate to straight rye substrate which would pertain to my second question which was -- "Would a pure rye grain substrate work better than the Alien tek substrate?"
I would appreciate hearing from people who have worked with both.

Why don't you test both? Anno is right (as usual) - some people have great success with a method or recipe, while others fail miserably with the same method or recipe. Have you grown yet? If not, you'll find out for yourself. There is a lot of trial and error to this hobby.

This question "Would a pure rye grain substrate work better than the Alien tek substrate?" is impossible to answer.
I can find you 100 people that will tell you "YES", and 100 people that would tell you "NO"
There are very little definitive answers in the mushroom cultivation.

I have been through several grows, but never with any whole grains because I didn't have a pressure cooker.
I wasn't sure is the Alien Tek was designed for half pint jars or for quart jars, or if it could be used for any size jar....
I just wanted to hear from people who have used both methods -- which one they more more difficult (how many jars lost to contams, how long to colonize substrate under the chosen environmental conditions, etc...)
And then when cased, how quickly did the casing become colonized -- how soon before the first flush... and how many flushes?
The Alien Tek claims to be the most nutritionally balanced substrate. I wanted to know how solid that claim is.
Just asking...

I am going to try both... I was just trying to do some research first by asking about other growers' experiences first.

Alien Tek produces some potent mushrooms that is for sure... but it is easy to mess up the recipe. Rye produces just as potent mushrooms and is easier to work with.
