Rye Berries same as Rye Grass Seed?

Are Rye Berries at all similar to Rye Grass Seed? Would the berries work for Screlotia substrate?

Rye berries are rye grain. Rye grass is a totally different plant than rye grain. Rye berries are not the same as rye grass seed.

Unlike rye grain (berries), rye grass seed is not intended for human consumption and is sold at hardware stores. Get the kind without fungicides.

0000 is correct.
Rye Berries are the same as Rye Grain.
Winter Rye is also another name for Rye Grain.

No you wouldn't use Rye Berries for making sclerotia.
I tried using Rye Grain a couple times for making sclerotia and the results were terrible.

sclerotia is the proper spelling by the way. :smile:

You want Rye Grass Seed.
You can find it at the hardware store with other grass seed for your lawn. :smile:

That looks like rye berries. I disagree with roadkill on this one. I prefer rye berries for sclerotia over rye grass seed, which was recommended by stamets in TMC. I regularly get between 1/2 and 2/3 of a quart of actual sclerotia from each quart of rye berries. I get nowhere near those results when using rye grass seed. However, either will work as spawn. Several years ago, I used nothing but rye grass seed and had great results as both spawn and for grain to grain transfers. It works fine, but is a bit harder to get the moisture content exact, and they don't shake up as easily as rye berries, but both work as either spawn or for producing sclerotia.

my post was made on 04/28/03...

back then, rye grass seed was used for sclerotia.


so we really don't disagree...

If you don't mind me asking, with a 1.5 litre jar (sorry I'm not familiar with US measurements) how wide should I make the hole in the lid for the exchange of gases? I have a hole saw which starts at about 1.2cm diameter. I will be using pillow stuffing as a filter.

1.2 cm is a bit big, but should work OK. The disadvantage of too large a hole is that the grains will begin to dry out, which is a pinning trigger that might cause fruits to form before full colonization. Instead of using a hole saw, I'd suggest using three or four 2mm holes simply drilled into the lid and covered with tyvek or medical tape to allow gas exchange.

Tyvek is impossible to get in Spain, I dont think Dupont operate here. Micropore however is easy. So if I drill 4 pf style holes 2mm each, and cover with micropore that will do the trick? I dont have a flow hood.

Or a 5 mm central hole with pillow stuffing and a few supplementary holes with micropore?

I've done some 'searching' ..... could someone point me toward a tek or some good reading concerning sclerotia?

I am tempted to blurt out, "What are you guys talking about!?" I have seen the topic come up now and again ... but I really have no clue.

Sorry to revive such a old post; I just figured it more convenient and would show I've did some searching before asking questions:

Rye Berries, I've not seen locally.  HOWEVER, Rye GRASS seed is very easily attainable.

Currently, is it considered an acceptable substrate, OR substance to spawn substrate to?

Rye grass seed can be used for anything I've ever inoculated it with.  It's a tad harder to get the moisture just right, but cubes will grow very well on rye grass seed spawned to manure, coir, etc.  In addition, rye berries will work very well for anything, including sclerotia.

What happened is in the early days, someone tried growing P mexicana on rye grass seed and they got nice sclerotia, so everyone thought you HAD to use RGS for sclerotia producing species.  The same thing happened with cubes and other species on rye berries, so they thought you HAD to use rye berries for those species.  Just use whatever you have available.  It also doesn't have to be rye grass seed.  I've used several types of grass seed, and so far all worked well.  Just use whatever your local nursery or hardware store has on the shelf.

So if I grow Tazmanian on Organic Rye Kernels or Fall Rye...will I still get fruits and regular growth or will it screw with yield and all that in the long term?
