Rye Berries not working(Plz Help)

Ok, my friend has now basically wasted about a case of fully colonized 1/2 pint jars made with brown rice flour and verm. He was told by a friend that each jar could be split in half and broken up real small to spawn rye berry jars. The rye berry jars were made with one cup rye to one cup water and pressure cooked for an hour. The pressure cooker than was allowed to cool and then the jars were tightened and shaken. One out of eleven jars fully colonized. The rest did nothing and then smelled really bad. What's the problem here? Does the cambodian strain not like rye berries? Is half of a 1/2 pint jar not enough spawn? Please help , I've searched for a solution and have yet to find one.

bad smell= bacterial contamination
1 cup water for 1 cup grain is too much water.
Try 100 g rye and 100-110g water(you have to make a test batch).
Also your transfer technique might not be clean enough.
