Hard Wheat or Rye Berries??

My friend got his hands on organic rye berries, and hard wheat berries. Which one do you guys think is better, and would 1 cup hard wheat, and 1 cup water be a suffecient ratio??

I did a little spawn race between the two in my last batch. 1 Jar was all wheat, 1 jar was half wheat half rye, and the other was all rye. The 100% rye colonized fastest, the 50/50 colonized 2nd fastest, and the 100% wheat finished last. All from the same syringe.

As for the ratio, I do not use "ratio"s anymore - too much room for error. I let them soak over night and they will absorb all that they need. Rinse, then strain very well. Add to jar and PC, I've had much less trouble with wetspot since doing that too.

lucky bastard. I've tinkered and been able to fix the ratios just right for myself, but I still prefer preboiling.

I agree though about the rye berries. By far they are my favorite grain. I've tested head to head 4 finch seed, 4 mix, and 4 rye. The rye kicked ass and took no prisoners, the straight finch followed a week later, and well the mix eventually colonized. Go for the rye man, and if you can toss about a tablespoon worth of quinoa in every jar, definately speeds things along, and helps fruiting off of straight rye.

Likewise, man. My cat doesn't even use cup measurements - he just dumps enough rye in a qurt jar to fill up to the 200ml mark, enough water to fill up to the 400 ml mark, then PC's for a hour. He rarely has any kind of contamination (well, before he applies the casing, anyway!).

Sweet. Alright my friend went with the rye berries, put 1 cup rye and 1 cup water ratio and let sit for 24 hours. Thanks for your help guys

Gotcha beat... I just eyeball it... Put rye berries halfway up the jar, cover with water, close and sHaKe the shit out of it, then make sure the water level is 3/16" over the rye (by eye) PC for 1 hour. Shake WELL when still hot. Put back in PC to cool. Perfect every time, just like Uncle Ben's!

Interesting - you must use more rye than we do. 200ml of rye is only like 1/4 of the jar, so you're probably using more like 400ml. A little less water too, by the sound of it. The rye must expand almost all the way up the jar.

It expands to 4/5 of the jar and colonizes beautifully, so I must be doing it right, I guess.

a kid i know is about to start grain for the first time. he has 1/2 jar of rye berries and slightly more water than rye in the jar, he intends on PC'ng for an hour, do teh rye berries expand a LOT? say to fil up most of the pint jar? or would they only expand say 1/4 their size? any help would be appreciated. thanks!

they expand alot, maybe about double volume as at start.
i use 1 cup rye + 3/4 c. water in a quart.
