recently went into my local feed store and asked for rye berries......the guy had no idea what i was talking about, he said that he has rye grass seeds. My question is what is the difference between rye grass seeds and rye berries and rye grain? I searched the boards and saw peeps grow off of rye grass seeds but i just want to know the difference between the 3....and possibly if you used them which gave you better results?
any info is greatly appreciated.

Rye Grain has several niknames.....Rye Berries, Winter Rye and several others. You would use this for mushrooms that you want to grow out.
Rye Grass Seed is different.....you would use this for sclerotia.
Rye Grain and Rye Grass Seed look nothing alike.

Yeah, I ran into this problem myself in the beginning... I asked for rye grain and they gave me a 15 pound sack of rye grass seed. I used it anyway, and I'm happy to say that I lost one out of 32 rye seed qt jars, but I lost seven of 21 WBS the same grow (fruiting was also stronger in the rye grass seed then in the wbs).
On the other hand, I once ordered 4 rye grain bags from musbox and they failed to grow under the same conditions, from the same syringes, at the same time as the other grows mentioned above. I was compensated, of course, and the set of pf style jars are working fine, but I've found the rye grass seed to be the best thing so far.

Rye seed might work... but the great thing about rye grain is that it can hold ALOT but still be able to shake around and stay solid... I have seen someone on here colonize a quart jar in less then 9 days.. and I colonized one with 1cc of spores in about 2 weeks...
When buying rye grain you must make sure it is organic... if it is not... you run the chance of fungicide being on it...
I have an ebay link to a store which sells organic rye grain at .75cents a pound... If you cant find it in your city.. PM me for the link, b/c shroomery probably wont let me post the link to sponsors.
Can you believe it though.. I have called 4 feed stores and about 6 or 7 whole market food sotres and organic food stores in one of the major cities in America... and no one has rye....

Rye grass seed makes excellent spawn. I've used it many times. It's a bit trickier to get the moisture right than rye berries, but once you do it works like a charm. It's easy to do 20 to 1 with grain to grain transfers using rye grass seed, and when spawned into bulk substrates, it goes a long way because of all the points of inoculation due to the smaller size. Adding gypsum when making the jars up is mandatory to prevent clumping.
Rye berries should be in any health food store worth a shit. I've never failed to find it in health food stores. If you get it in 25 pound bags, you shouldn't pay over 35 cents per pound. If they don't keep it in stock, simply ask them to order it for you. The wholesale suppliers to health food stores always have it. RR

The way you guys talk, it should be easy to find rye where I live...
But im not joking, I have spent an entire day looking for Rye grain before... about 3 feed stores, 4 whole food markets, and 2 organic food stores, including a very large central market. No one had it....
The food stores said they assume fungicide and pesticide touched the rye.

Dude, I lived in Plano for ten years. I never had more than 5 minutes of work from the phone book to find somebody who had organic rye berries in stock, and that's only looking on the north side of 635. RR
