It may be against your nature but they want to convince you that they're your new best friend and has the deal of the century for you. If you are semi-unresponsive it may tone down their assault. Don't let your eyes light up when they show you some gizmo on the truck that you totally love. They will try and bait you and elicit emotional response from you. Don't fall under the spell. Remember to be a rock. Having a clipboard or something you are consulting and making notes on helps you ignore their attempts to get you jazzed up.
2. let them know right away you are shopping around and plan to hit all the major dealers and whoever gives you the best deal will get your money. Don't go to the big Ford dealer and tell them, "I want a Ford truck". Best to let them think they are in competition with Chevy, Dodge, Toyota, etc. Bring newspaper ads from competing dealers and whip them out at the appropriate time.
3. When they start to put the pressure on and want to sit you down to "work out a deal" tell them you're not ready and still have some other dealers you want to check out. Make THEM sweat it. If you're buying new it's not like this particular car won't be there tomorrow, you can just order another and wait. Don't let them try to make you consider low mileage preowned cars because "that might be more in your price range".
4. When in doubt, say thank you very much I've got to go. It's best to shop for cars when you have lots of time like several months or so. That way you go back and forth dealer to dealer chiseling away at their bottom line. Usually doesn't work out that way but if you have time you stand the advantage. They are counting on you being desperate and emotional.
YOU are in charge. Don't be bullied by scumbag car dealers!!
Good luck. Like to see some pics when you get the new truck..
sounds like some good advice, will definitely use the ads and the clipboard thing. I already know i want a ford f-150, 4x4, leather interior, supercrew, so thats all my requirements really. I will use the 'looking at other brands' thing too, though im not...lol. I also do have more than enough time. My original timeline to buy was in february when i get my yearly bonus, but i got a promotion this month and was hoping to be able to buy a little sooner with it, and seeing that the 2010 models just came out, should be able to grab a nice discount on the 2009 models.

That would have been bad ass, since its exactly what i need. I am going out looking tomorrow, if i get dicked around too much, i will probably hit you up, i am about 5hrs away from the dallas area, in south texas, but i woudl gladly drive there if the deal is right.

when they pull that crap I get up and go get some coffee, chat up another sales rep for a minute, when they're ready to realize you'll work a deal on your terms then talk with them again, let them know it upfront... anytime you hear 'what can I do to earn your business today' I take that as a cue.
go in with an amount you're willing to pay based on what you've seen in the sales ads, make them knock anywhere from $6000-$10000 off the price, I got a truck that was listed at $36k on the sticker, it was one of those '$100 over invoice' sales, I drove it off the lot for $26,500 with a 100k warranty after tax and tag
break down all those options they try and fuck you on, a set of wheels doesnt cost $4500, a factory CD player isnt $800, never pay for destination and prep charges, in order for them to sell you the truck, they need to have it on their lot, they already hide the charge then relist it on the sticker
pay close attention to any finance paperwork, make sure you're not paying for any extras like insurance on the truck, most dealers try and sell you insurance which you pay for over the life of the loan but you only get coverage for 6 months to a year, that the reason a lot of people are paying $600/mo payments
great, all that sounds good. Yeah, MSRP on the truck im lookin at is around 36k - 40k, and im hoping to knock it down to ~28k before trade in...I am also not looking for all the options from the factory, want aftermarket stereo and wheels, which i will be installing myself, and also some performance parts, so none of that jibber jabber is needed either.
One more question to add, i can easily get a pre-approval as a good negotiating tool. I can get this for about as much as i would want, as i have good credit, employment history, and income. Should i get it for say 30k and have that as my 'limit' sorta? Or should i get one for 40k to ensure i have enough preapproved for anything i want...great stuff guys, keep it coming...
peace
