How do you deal with a salesman at a car dealership?
    #22629401 - 12/08/15 10:14 AM (8 years, 4 months ago)

The minute I walk in a car dealership, I feel that I'm gonna get fucked over. I'll sit down start negociating, the dude will say that he's going to see his manager, but we all know they'll be talking abbout last night's football game... They'll dick around with you and then if you finally decide that the number is low enough and buy the car... You know you've been fucked over because nobody is gonna lose money on a deal...

So how do you win against these guys?

So the retail price of the car with everything you want in it is like 24 367$. Then comes the fucking around.

How do you negociate this? How low do you go? How do you know if it's a good price when you get out of there?

They have quotas. Make them work for it.

Or buy a car from a private party, fix it up good, spend half the money.

Look at https://www.truecar.com/. Then play hardball. Don't go alone and be ready to walk away. They don't want you to walk out because they know you won't be back.

I had one weasley manager at a dealership really piss me off. He started playing mind games. Luckily my brother was with me, he diffused the situation and we left.

I have heard you should get the car price settled before you talk about a trade-in.

There is a way to know how much the dealership actually paid for the car themselves, you can go from there.

tel him to get the sales manager in, verify that the man is actually the sales
manager, set a price you're willing to pay and walk out of you feel you're being
pressured. other dealers are happy to take your business

Really? A car dealership offered me 2 grand for my truck and I sold it for 6500 not even 2 weeks later. The ad cost me 30 dollars. Pretty darn good investment.

Personally, I usually lease cars. Since I've leased four vehicles all in a similar price range, I have an idea about what I want to pay.

You need to realize the flip side of the equation: By the time a salesperson has talked to you, taken your information, taken you for a test drive etc. he/she has put in a lot of time. If you walk, they lose too.

I've sat with a salesperson before and said "I'm only paying 10k for this lease." He didn't do it and I walked. They called me the next morning and gave me the price.

Get up and start to leave. Remember you are the one calling the shots here. There are many other places to get a car.
When I was younger I ate shit at one of those places cause I brought a young woman along to buy her a car and she really wanted the 35,000$ one. High interest rate and warranty. You just sign all that stuff. readings boring.

Walking out on them is what gets you the deal.
Look up as much info as you can on the car, blue book value, etc.
Set the price you want and if they dont wanna work with you take offense to that and walk the fuck out.
They will call you.

The thing with this blue book is that I have a strong feeling the car comanies pay the guy who writes it to artificially inflate the price of the cars so they make more money

Fuck car dealers.

If you know what youre looking for and can inspect it yourself youre better off usig kijiji. (Craiglist isnt as popular in canada)

Thats where I found my car. It ended up being from a small one man dealership who operated off another persons lot so they had minimal expenses...

But i would have never found them without kijiji. You can check prices for a while on what you like and go after the low pricing low km vehicles.

Then you can usually barter even more once you go to check it out.

Money talks

OP only buy at the end of the month or year, they will be much more interested to deal due to quotas. you have the power here, have a down payment or trade in for leverage. play hard to get, if they don't get you where you want to be money wise walk out.

last car i bought took 2 hours to get the right deal, and they gave me 2k for my beat scrap parts old car.

do your homework on what your car is worth if trading in and what their car is worth. if you don't dig on your sales person request another one, you again call the shots here.

keep in mind it might be different there but you will get fucked on taxes and other fees at the end, no avoiding this.

be strong, smart, and keep your cards close to your chest. any person in sales is going to try and find common ground with you to attempt to earn your trust and distract you from what you should be focusing on.

remember their job is to dick you for every cent they can, don't forget that.

Pay cash and definitely don't offer more than 21 if the car is retail 24.5

I have a friend who is a burnt out manager at a bmw/mini dealership.
Couple of things

New cars have a much smaller margin than used. Used has a huge markup
Buy a car near the end of the month. Salesman want to hit quotas and will bend over backwards to make the deal happen.
have a price you want to pay and be prepared to walk out. Make sure the salesman has your number
If your price was within reason, you should get a call back or not have to walk out at all.

One of the cars I used to own, my brother in law and I walked in and told them a number and stuck to it.  They said no no no no no no over and over.  We got up walked out and when were about to drive away they flagged us down and ran to the car and said you got a deal.

I always just buy from a private party so I don't have to deal with the greasy salesmen. You get a better price that way too because you are cutting out the middle man. Unless you're buying a new car, I don't see any reason to buy from a dealer.

You could always just convert the currency exchange rate from the US dollar to Canadian. Of-course their are other variables, but it'll be pretty god damn close to what it's worth.

Of course there's a canadian equivalent...

And you don't know me very well. I'm a good negotiator. As for undercoating. If you had winter like we do up here. It's practically mandatory, otherwise, your car will rust like a bitch.

I just leased my lady a car. I got a 2016 instead of a 2015 leftover (2015s are "cheap" this time of year). I'm nervous about owning something new. You can't work on the new shit.

The car I leased the engine shuts off at stop lights and upon lifting off the break an electric motor (has spare battery) kick starts the engine and you drive off.

I drive a full sized truck, she drives the lease daily.

Do your homework before you go. Figure out the bluebook value of the car, the invoice price the dealership pays for it. What other people have paid.
Don't let them screw you with insane markups, which they always do by default. Figure out your general range and stick to it.
Bring a smartphone and have all the info handy so you can cross-reference shit on the spot. I'm positive they hate that.
And be prepared to walk if you don't like what they are offering you.

Minus the smart phone thing, I was pretty much going to say that. Know what the cars worth and what your willing to pay and offer that. If they don't bite, no car!:peace:

You don't.  Salesmen are middle men who get in between you and the producer.  You will always overpay at a dealership, every time.  What you get is convenience and instant gratification.

This is how I buy all my cars.  No loan, no salesman.

The smartphone thing is a good idea. Nothing a shady car salesman hates more then an informed car buyer who can whip out his phone and pull up bluebook values, actual invoice price and so on.

checkout carcomplaints.com for the car you're buying. They tell you all the common problems that those cars have, what mileage the problems occur, and how much they cost to fix. I guess it's mostly for used cars though so I'm not sure if that will help you.
