LC jar question

hey guys, has anyone ever just used a mason jar with regular punched holes in the lid with micro-pore tape over the holes, just like your substrate jars to do LC jars.

would that work, could i just use a regular punched lid with micro pore tape to make an LC jar? or do you NEED a septa(medical port) or air tight lid?

with only having access to a shitty glovebox , what is the best way to go about making LC jars?

i've seen a few teks on here and bookmarked them, but it seems like everyone here has their own tricks. please share some info, thanks.

All of mine have worked just fine so far, I put rtv sealnt on both holes but if you dont have rtv

Micro pore tape works fine if you dont get it wet.

I fill my half pints about 85% full and add like a tabelspoon or so of karo and after 3 to 8 days wala nice lookin snow.

mabe wrap the whole thing in tinfoil when PC'd to make sure not wet gets thru. lol

and how long does one PC a jar at 15psi for? is it 15 minutes?

They need gas exchange best way is to use a 1/2 pint jar with a self healing injection port, and a tyvek or poly fill gas exchange port and optionally put a piece of glass or something to agitate the myc i use crystals like Quartz ect..  . Tin foil over the top of the jar PC at 15 PSI or even 10 has worked for 20 min turn off heat let it completely cool down don't open the PC for a few hours.

Oh and for micro-pore tape over the holes, You can use it just now you have to swirl the LC to distribute the myc you cant get the micropore tape wet at all thats why tyvek is best you can get it wet.

Haven't used micropore tape, but I've done plenty of LC jars with polyfil.

I have used Micropore and it worked but you really have to be careful on how you agitate the LC not to get the micropore tape wet

You can make a LC lid with a short 1/4" dia X 2" long air tube. Use red RTV to seal the air port tube in place. punch the hole and widen with a Phillips head screw driver, then punch a second hole for a self healing injection port and seal it with red RV also. Then fill the tube with a small amount of polyfill for a filter its all ok for the PC also, it will work great! check out the search to find some similar teks!!

You do need ge. You can also put a pint's worth of lc in a quart jar to make it easier to agitate.

I've used micro pore tape for almost all of mine. I just punched one 1/4" hole and covered it. I do like the rtv and tyvek WAY better though and it isn't that much of an investment, maybe ten bucks or so. You will be glad you made the investment, plus the rtv is a trip! The needle goes right through leaving no hole, it doesn't get clogged, it's magic I tell you:mushroom2:

I have used micropore tape over a hole in the lid and it does work, but you increase contam risk. Micropore tape is not a perfect filter and can allow contam to enter. Also when you inoculate the LC or use some of the LC you will make a hole in the tape. Now you risk more contam because you have to cover the hole with more tape.

Contam risk is lower if you do this inside of a GB, but I prefer to work out in the the open air. That is why I very much prefer to make my lids this way:
