Substrate Jar Question (pic)

I have a jar that is still not completely colonized, probably 85%, and has been growing really slowly the past few days. This morning I noticed little white spots sticking up all over and am guessing these are pins? What should I do from here w/ this particular jar?

what strain are you growing?, are the white spots about the size of the end of a pencil eraser(maybe a little smaller)?, are they out of the light?, and what temperature are they in?

the strain is cambodian. The white spots are actually smaller. Seems actually like "stringy" mycelium sticking "up" (perpendicular) to the rest of the mycelium and is bumping up against the glass jar. Seems to be probably 50 of them or so.
the jars are out of direct sunlight except for me occassionally checking on them. Then back in the dark. The room temp is about 75 degrees (i just keep it in my office and my computer does a good job keeping the room a bit warmer than the rest of the house.)
... i could post a pic if my description isn't enough...

if the white spots are "stringey" it might be that you have cob web mold, this mold develops in the dark mostly.. you should look at some contamination pics. if the white spots are forming in other places than where the mycilium is, then i would guess it is cob web mold, to get rid of it put the jars under a lamp for a day, caution this may dry your mycilium so make sure the lamp isnt to hot, but before anything check out the cob web pics

ok, now you have me a bit concerned for my little jar. :( Ok, I took a picture and did the best I could to zoom in on it. notice in the bottom left-hand corner. Also, see how there are little dots of what look like moisture on the jar?

doesnt look like there is any cobweb mold, but the picture is a little fuzzy. good news is that it looks like the cake is starting to pin. i see a few little white dots. if those continue to pop up, id put the jar in the fridge for about six hours then flip em or case them. congrats

great! :)
ok, last question. the jar isn't fully colonized yet, so my question is, do I continue to wait until it's fully colonized before I birth it, or should I go ahead and birth the cake as-is. (15% or so not colonized).?

you wana try and wait for the cake to be fully colonized, this is because the uncolonized substrate is very vulnerable to contams, if the cake is fully colonized the mycilia network works like a sheild, and the fridge is called shocking the cakes. in nature mushroom pinning is triggered by temp decreasement and rise and moisture. the cold temperature makes the mushroom think that there was a rain fall which means there is humidity and moisture in the air which the mushroom needs to fruit. the cold also stops or slows the development of the mycilia. this means that the network will begin its cytoplasmic reticulem. the network sends its stored nutrients into specific locations on the myciliums surface to begin its fruiting process which of course produces the shrooms. by puting them in the fridge it you will be playing god and trigger a natural mushroom reaction. just make sure the fridges temp is not bellow 50 f

ok, that's great info! :)
is there a way I can re-stimulate mycelium growth in the jar before I birth the cake? Seems to have really slowed down here the past few days. Same with my other jar. Also, will keeping it in the jar even though the cake is pinning on one side be bad for it?

I am relaying a suggestion from someone else.. possibly Necron.. anyway.. the jars may not have enough oxygen.. so try flipping them over, and giving them a gentle tap so the cake drops, then leave em like that for a day.. I am having the same problem as you are right now.. and trying this with a few jars.

Thanks for the suggestion. I turned the jars over and tapped the cake down as recommended. Hopefully this will help! I need a good solid white mycelium growth so I can birth these two babies. They are both pinning now after closer inspection.
food for thought: i had originally innoculated 3 jars with the same syringe, and one jar is already 100% colonized. What's the difference you ask? :) Well, that particular jar I innoculated at the center of teh substrate instead of the outside. It seemed at first like nothing was happening, but then shortly outgrew the other two jars after about day 10.

oh, btw, what exactly are you referring to when you said that my cake was pinning? Was I right about the little "stringy" looking white dots that are pressing up against the glass being pins?
(dude, i AM a newbie huh!).. thanks for putting up w/ my questions.
