Substrate shelf life and control jar questions
    #657470 -

Okay. Another beginner question. I've got all my PF tek supplies, and I'm awaiting my shipment of spores. I don't know how long it'll be before they arrive, but would it be wise to go ahead and prepare and sterlize my substrate jars? Or should I wait until the spores arrive so that the substrate doesn't dry out/go bad?

Also, I read somewhere that a non-inoculated control jar can be used to see if the sterlization process is working by monitoring it for any growths. Again, after sitting around, can this jar be used for growing or should it be reprocessed?

Thanks in advance for the help!

my suggestion to you is to wait until your spores get there. It is nearly impossible to get a jar 100% sterilized so doing them ahead of time and letting them sit could bring you a disaster. Yes, it is a good way to monitor your sterilization process but really unnecessary. As far as "reprocessing" your jars, I'm assuming you mean resterilizing, that will normally do no more than dry your jars out. Which is not a good thing. So with all this being said I would just wait for your spores to arrive.

True, but by pressure cooking and waiting 48 hours to inoculate, you can check your jars to be sure no contaminants form. If they do, you won't waste your spores and your time.
