50/50+ Procedure Question (sterlization)

For the 50/50+ casing mix...........
1. Should I mix ALL of the ingredients and THEN sterlize in microwave for 5 min.? Will that kill anything important in the mix?
2. How deep should I go with the vermic., mycelium, and casing mix for each layer?
3. Sould I cover the trays with saran wrap for one week in the chamber and then open them up?

go to thehawkseye.com under methods, that will answer questions 2 and 3. My question is this:

Is sterilization of the casing really necessary? Also number one I need answered because I am unfamiliar with microwave sterilization.

Smurf, If you don't mind sharing your casings with lots of other bacteria and lots of other fungus, dont bother sterilizing, otherwise sterilize

I sterilize in a pressure cooker, mix the soil/substrate/whatever throw into quart jars, pressure cook at 15 PSI for 1 hour just to be on the safe size

This is an old thread, but time for an update.

I microwaved verm, and it melted through my microwaveable container. It was a total mess. Stunk up the whole house like peatmoss.

was trying to sterelize my 50/50 mix... I now PC.

i've had something similar happen. it is not so much that the verm melts (its melting point is higher than your micro can produce, i think) but it does produce quite a bit of heat when subject to the microwaves, much more than a frozen dinner is capable or producing. and a 'microwave safe' plastic container gets superheated where the verm is touching the sides, and melts.

'microwave safe' when containing food, not so good for hot minerals such as rocks or verm,

so, both answers are right...

i say no, part of what gets the heat to distribute through out the mix is a little steam. a note though, when i've ever micro'ed a casing mix, the water steams off and its pretty much dry. sure, you could add water, but i'll find i get contams soon that way anyway.

IF you have a pressure cooker, the pressure and moisture content of the air in the cooker keeps your mix just right, and i find i can go MONTHS without contams...

mix the casing

test and adjust ph in the casing

jar or bag up the casing mix

pressure cook at 15psi for 50-60 minutes and allow to cool

open and seal bags (with jars this does not apply)

store for however long until needed for use

as a precaution... test ph again right before application, should be fine.

This is just how I do it. I usually maintain great ph throughout the cycle. I have a water alkalizer and use slightly akaline water, like 7.5 or so for misting and rehydration during the later flushes. Usually the oyster shell does the job though...

oh, the water addition to the casing to field capacity happens during the first stage of mixing. Pre-sterilization.
