Do not give up on WBS.  Next time, rinse more.  I rinse a LOT.  If you think you are done rinsing, rinse some more.

My grains almost fall apart when I take them out of the PC. Try shaking when they are still hot. DO NOT let the grains cool before you shake.  I mean, you can, but it makes separating the kernels so much easier.

Honestly, I would buy a cheap basketball before I bought a bike tire.  It will save you some money and has the exact same effect as a bike tire.

I had that problem too, no matter what I got gluey shit on the bottom.  Then someone told me to add some verm to your WBS and I havent had that problem since.

I too have heard of using verm as well, but there are some precautions that can be taken to assure the grains don't clump too badly.

1.  Make sure your grains pass the "spoon" test or "Hand" test before loading them in the jars.  Simmering helps with this, as the hot grains will allow the water to evaporate off when draining.  This is why I don't rinse again after the simmer, just make sure all the crud is gone before it's simmer time.

2.  I don't simmer for any specified time period.  I watch the grains closely and when I notice a few grains begin to burst, I remove it from the heat.  Burst grains will cause the starch inside them to be released, this is what forms the grey gluey shit in the bottom of your jars.

3.  I find that a telephone book works well for shaking the grains at 5,10 and 50% colonization.  Once they're fully colonized, mine tend to become like bricks.  The best way I've found of getting the fully colonized grain out of the jars is with the implementation of a fork... got the idea from Large Dose's coir and Ohmatic monotub teks.

Hope that advice helps some of you... I almost gave up on WBS, but after a little experimentation am now confident that I can prepare them to my satisfaction.

hay man try this --had to edit in red for more accuracy

i have been working on a new Pegasus tek. it goes something like this...

i use a 1/2 pint gar to measure with. so 3 jars of wbs 1 jar packed tight of ground up hpoo. " get it bird/horse=Pegasus " my new idea.
mix well still dry and keep it that way.

fill the jar you will pc in [strike---]3/4 fullto the 1 cup line loose not packed at allshaken down to settel it.
then add 3/4 water " note 3/4 water means 3/4 of the level of Pegasus mix. " add 65-70ml h2o.

all this is relevant to the amount you want to make up i just mix a whole bag of Pegasus up in a 5 gal bucket and scoop out of that.

so i fill a jar ---3/4---1/2 full of Pegasus mix then pour in water till it reaches 3/4's of the level of the Pegasus mix65-70ml. cap it with a piece of poly fill then the lid with 2 holes 1 of which is dab ed with silly cone and then the ring. place some aluminum foil on top pc @ 18psi for 1 hr cool till safety valve drops dawn some gloves remove jars beat my jars remove aluminum im foil put tape over open holes and beat my jars ......oh then i beat my jars again.  not hard just a few times to loosen the grain. if you are breaking the jars you have too much water in them before you pc.


i am working with adding spent coffee grins and gypsum

i also got 1 jar i used mountain dew instead of water to see if caffeine and sugar helps. "call this one --mile high peg "

i knock up with my multi spore oyster lc made with corn sugar and light malt extract.

2cc-4cc of lc and i see growth in 24hrs.


if you try this let me know ...it is working for me right now and seems to speed things up some.

doing this tek with lids and other stuff as i have said leaves open some other ideas like too add later...... a 2 cc injection of h2o2 when the jar is cooled down. so long as you do not want to inject multi spore into the jar. it will only work for Lc and the like.

also for bulk sub Pegasus will work good too just drop 1 jar of seed and make it 50/50 and pc at the same 1hr inject 2cc 3 % h2o2 per pint when cool and then mix well. add spawn 50/50..... mix well in trash bag and place in tinfoil pan with most all the air squeezed out and watch what happens then.

don't give up on wbs man it rules and if you add hpoo to get Pegasus then you can't go wrong. also h2o2 is a good addition to bulk too ward off contam.

PS i still do not know what to do with jars that have too much water in them. if its clumped together like that man just start over not worth all the hassle.

I dont measure it just whack it in.

Do a trial ie how much verm do you need to absorb 10 ml water.

I'm know geenious, enough said, but I think your working to hard.  Agar's post states that he never simmered, and suggested rinsing and drying was even more important in order to avoid the gummy mess

It does seem that the starch from to many busted grains starts this problem.

I use Agar's soak, with no problem, and, no simmering. I now use RR's method of rinsing due to it's ease.

I have a very large strainer for IKEA, it's a collapsible laundry hamper with a very fine mesh, $10 and it gets out of the way when your done.  I just let it sit until none sticks to my hands.
