Coffee grounds in BRF cakes?
    #10974571 -

I've been drinking coffee lately and also thinking of starting up a new grow--perhaps using spent coffee grounds. I've done a search and found lots of posts regarding using them in casings along with coir--but what about adding them to the mixture for BRF cakes? Has anyone tried this? Would it hurt, help, or not make much difference?

I personally just started adding coffee to my BRF cakes.  I think it helps.

Don't add too much. The grounds from one pot of coffee would probably be good for 5 or MORE jars worth of substrate. I read that too much N, (which is what you want from the coffee) can burn the mycelium. I'm not sure how it would affect the pH with your cakes..I know lots of people use it in bulk subs. Wait around for someone that knows about the pH aspect.

I use the grounds from one pot to make 8 jars.

1. Regular PF tech, (BRF, Verm)

2. PF tech W/ Coffee and Gypsum (BRF, Verm, Coffee, Gypsum)

3. A modded PF tek, (WBSF, BRF, Verm, Coffee, Gypsum)

4. Modded PF tech without the BRF, (WBSF, Verm, Coffee, Gypsum)

At this stage of the picture you can obviously tell that the presence of BRF is a key factor to growth performance, but when these neared fully colonization, #2 did it the fastest, and the flush was better: but it was MS so could have just been genetics to a certain degree... But the degree in difference was so dramatic my opinion doesn't lean towards blaming genetics. The mix was key imo.

Mushrooms prefer an acidic PH. Coffee has a fairly strong Acidic PH. People use coffee for its Nitrogen, and PH asphyxiation.

A little goes a long ways. 2-5% of your total sub mix is plenty.

I don't know where you seen coffee used for "casing" it is used in substrate...

Yes, but in bulk teks that utilized a casing layer--guess I wasn't so clear about that. I hadn't seen anything involving BRF cakes, though.

Thanks for the tips, and Boris, thanks for sharing the results of your study! Most helpful. I think I'll throw some coffee in the mix.

Coffee grinds are a bulk substrate ingredient.  Don't use them in brf cakes, since they'll only dilute the mix. They might help it colonize faster, but fruiting performance will be less than using the basic tek.

Are these coffee grounds that have already been use to make coffee,or are they fresh?
