Skin Fungus ID

So my girlfriend of the past year has had strange markings on her chest as long as I have known her. 

Turns out it's a fungus.  She tells me that this is all that her doctor had to offer her in the way of information, and that several common fungal infection remedies had proved ineffective. 

I start taking a look at it.  It's off white (slightly lighter than the surrounding skin) and blotchy in appearance.  It appears to be a cutaneous mycosis and had previously shown no propensity as a threat for contagious transfer. 

To make matters worse, I woke up this morning to see that I have up to 10 potential infection sites on my chest and abdomen.  They are all less than 1 cm in diameter at the moment, but will no doubt grow to become a single blotchy colony if left to spread unchecked. 

I'm assuming that the hot summer temperatures and the fact that she and I spend damn near half the day in bed outside of class allowed for the transmission, if that's any hint as to its identity.  I can get pictures up in the near future if it proves necessary.

I know that copper can be used as a fungicide, so I'm currently giving that a shot with some copper piping.

Dry your skin when you shower and get some bright light on the site, that's about all I can suggest!

A dermatologist or a forum of them, may know a bit better :wink:

if youre going to try ghetto treatment, i'd suggest throwing some apple cider vinegar at it.
if youre poor, antifungal medicine can be bought from mexico over the internet pretty cheap.

Neem Leaf Oil in Coconut Oil, 1 to 5 or greater dilution. Warm a little Coconut Oil in a water bath and add Neem. Stir well. Apply as needed.

Scent may be a little unpleasant and garlicky taste will come to mouth.

Taking Acidophilus will help maintain intestinal flora.

Neem is a very potent vermicide - fungicide. Discontinue use after fungal rash is controlled.

Thanks a ton for all of your help. 

Having done a bit more research, I'm fairly confident that Tinea versicolor is the culprit. I'm applying some apple cider vinegar right now.

I wouldn't fool around with it. My suggestion is to get some ketoconazole, available as Nizoral anti-dandruff shampoo.  I would apply that during all showers and further rub some on occasionally throughout the day.  You might also be able to get the ointment.

Pretreatment with hydrogen peroxide and some good old sun exposure would also be good.

The white spots show up because the melanin in your skin isnt being activated because theres a fungus in there acting like a sunblock.  Sulphur based soap in the shower along with applying tea tree oil can help.  Also using a yeast infection medicine or athletes foot medicine on the spots or mixed with a little body lotion and rubbed all over can help.  Many times fungus infection is systemic (new information the USA doctors dont want to publish) so taking something internally to control fungus can help..the health food store has a blend called "Yeast Guard" or tea tree oil capsules and grapefruit seed capsules can help too.

Tinea Versicolor is a bitch! I've had it most of my life. The only thing that seems to work is ketoconazole. Even with the drug it has a very large chance of coming back. It's worth taking a visit to the dermotologist and filling your prescription in Canada.  What I did though, after a very long amount of research was buy these for 30 bucks

It's pharmaceutical grade Ketoconazole and 100% pure. It cured my tinea versicolor as well as my bosses! If you can afford it though, go to the dermatologist, but my suggestion is don't settle for a cream, get the pills.

If youre interested in natural remedies for any kind of skin fungal infection you should definitely look into neem and coconut oils like someone said earlier... but also tea tree oil... I caught ringworm (which is a type of tinea fungus) from my dogs and i used everything from rx medicine to lotramin which didnt work then i tried coating the area with tea tree oil after each shower, let it dry and then put a coat of liquid bandage over it and it was gone in less than a week.

i agree with the tinea versicolor. i had the same thing a little while back. i went to the dermatologist, and he gave me this soap to was with in the shower for 2 says, and it went away and i havent seen it since.

it could be Vitiligo kind of looks the same u get it from humid  environments such as Hawaii thats were my gf got it

I am concerned about the enabling environment for the development of skin diseases in large cities. And the daily washing of the body and hair. If something unexpected happens that with mankind, eat a lot of skin fungus parasite. Sometimes, let the body fight itself with mud, if it is not an emergency case.

yeah there they call it "Hale' Rot".  Hale is like the "N" word for white people from local islanders, and the word "Hale" means without breath, cuz when the white people arrived they stuck their hand out to greet the Hawaiians..instead of exchanging breath, or "spirit" . So Hale means without spirit, and your GF has the Hale Rot! 

I got my first batch in Hawaii too.  Had to share the story sorry to bust the thread!

There is a native New Zealand plant called Pseudowintera colorata, the Maori name for this plant is Horopito and it is used as a remedy for fungal infections of the skin among other medicinal uses.
It is also known as New Zealand pepper tree and when the leaves or bark are chewed it is extremely spicy, it is now known to be one of the most effective anti fungal herbs and is also known to have anti bacterial properties, I'm not sure how available this plant is in other countries, here is a link with some information!
