It's a scam. I've received hundreds of emails all following that same general format. It works like this. 
Some fuck in Nigeria wants to buy the item, that 90% of the time they don't even know what it is, but they assure you they will buy it and arrange for everything.
They send their "certified check" (which is a fake) and then urge you to send the item or the "goods" whatever they may be.
Some people think they are getting too good of a deal so they deposit the check and send the item to nigeria or whereverthefuck, only to later discover, oh shit.. it was a fraudulent check. Some banks don't fuck around with that either.
People are dumb and when things seems too\ good to be true, they usually are...
because there is always some brown guy in south Zimbabwe waiting to rip off dumb americans if you let him.

How is this a scam.

The guy is sending Drew a check for the guitar + $50 to take the add down

He isn't asking for any bank account numbers
he isn't trying to offer him anything but payment for the guitar

I just don't see how this is a scam.

How else should one go about trying to make arrangements for payment?


It's a fake check, and the "I'll take care of shipping" thing is the trademark of the Nigerian prince. You cash the check - but it takes weeks to clear, and when it bounces, he already "took care of shipping" and you're fucked.

Assuming the bank doesn't close his account for trying to deposit a fraudulent check, or assuming the guy doesn't somehow talk him into sending the item before the check "clears", yeah you're right, it wont effect him except for being a big waste of time.

They do this all day long. Even if for every 20 "checks" they send out, only 1 guy actually sends something, they are making profit.

Big problem, a lot of the times they won't send it until they get the item or until you can show them proof that you've sent it.

I've dragged along a couple of these scammer assholes for a couple weeks until telling em to eat shit.

He'll probably get a check for more than the cost of the item, and the guy will ask him to give the extra money to the person picking the item up.

They'll also probably try and get him to write them a check for the extra amount, that way they can forge checks with his account information on it in the future. That's why their check will initially go through without any problems, the account number links to a real persons account. It doesn't become an issue until that person overdrafts, or disputes the transaction.

They're crafty fuckers.:ninja:

Were you born with a few missing chromosomes? This guy doesn't live in America, he lives in Nigeria, it's obvious from the pigdin Nigerian English he's speaking in. I still don't see how they profit. Overseas shipping, especially on something as bulky as a guitar, is not cheap.

I'm not saying I don't think this is a scam, merely that I question the origin on the scam.
