Why digital cameras suck... a sad story

Don't get me wrong, I love my Nikon coolpix 885 (or whatever it is). It's a small little camera that lets me take lots of very large photos at a high resolution, 369 per card at just under 4 mp to be exact. The bad part is that the aren't physically a photograph unless you print them out. (I know that you're all smart people and that you know this, but I'm ranting because you guys are great and I'm very sad:rant:). I like nothing more than to take my camera on road trips and sneak it in to concerts to capture those life-changing moments. Unfortunately, I've been on more trips than my hard drive at home can handle :undecided: . One such trip was the Phish show in Miami this past New Years, which was one of my best trips ever. I took so many photos that I couldn't fit them on my home computer, and just now I tried to burn them to cd from the computer that they were stored on, but only half of them are there  :frown: . I know that there was a server crash, but that doesn't explain why only half a folder is missing:confused:... The last photo I have is of me just before we went inside, just before the great concert photos began :crying:. Let this be a lesson to all you digital nerds out there, back up your stuff, back up your stuff, back up your stuff! Lest memories be lost.

Im not much of a nerd so I cant help ya. I dont even know what you mean by "4 mp".

Sorry about your photos though. I was at that same show! I wish I brought a camera with me, I dont know why I didnt.

I have a Coolpix 885. It's a few years old and its been superceded twice. As far as picture quality and features its a decent camera, like all Nikon cameras, but I've owned two and they both had problems with "server errors" where they would just freeze and wouldn't switch off or retract the lens. I had the first one replaced then the second one did the same thing when I was trying to focus on a baby gecko in lowlight in macro mode. The camera wasn't able to focus so it had a temper tantrum, froze and refused to work until I paid $60 to get the stupid bastard repaired. I happened to be travelling at the time so it was really freaking inconvenient and I missed out on alot of brilliant photo ops while the camera was out of action.
So yeah, the Coolpix 885 sucks. The newer coolpix cameras are really nice little cameras though.

Damn, a sexy little 4mp camera would get me stoked! Memory constraints and cons need not influence my opinion on those cams. Heh, I don't take to many pics to begin with. :smirk:

That really sucks about your pictures though... I know the feeling. It's sketchy keeping really important pictures on a little memory card. Eek.

my cd burning tools have been busy.

I will always have the memories, but I had some killer pics too! For an abused little camera, it sure works well for me! I bought it for when I took a long trip to Australia, and since then I've hauled it all over the place with me, and I've really become spoiled with all the nifty options and specail features for taking great concert photos. I had some professional looking pics of that light show!

The camera has never failed me (eats batteries when I use a huge memory card though), and it was the computer that I uploaded the photos to that had the server crash  :frown: . It just makes me sad to have lost some of the photos from one of my best days ever.

I hear ya.. =\ I lost 6000 photos when my computer died.. along with all my music, and all my digital art..

Ouchy! Losing art work of any kind is always a bummer. And if I had to re-rip/download all the music on my computer, it would take me forever! Yes, back it all up. I totally feel for you  :frown:

I had some of the work printed.. so some wasn't entirely lost.. just greatly reduced in quality.. Lots of memories will fade without those drawings and pictures, I'll never see them again.

The music, however, was just a setback.. I've got a good 20 times as much now. :wink: <3 DSL

Yeah for DSL! I had a wonderful ethernet connection at my university (nothing like fast college internet!) where I downloaded most of my online/traded music. I also ripped most of my boyfriend's cds (he has one amazing collection!).

Lost photos are always sad :frown: . True the memories will be there, but I had some killer photos! I'd feel better if I knew how they were lost, and why. Glad you saved some of the art! Nothing like putting days/weeks/months into a great piece of work only to have it ruined! I've made high quality copies of all my art (all the 'good stuff' anyway) and put them in a nice plastic (waterproof!) portfolio, so hopefully if I lose the copy, the original won't be damaged and visa versa. Way to copy some of your stuff! Again, I feel your pain.
