I discovered one hassle with digital cameras
    #2977990 - 08/08/04 07:51 PM (18 years, 3 months ago)

I got my new digital camera a couple months ago.  I love it.  But I have discovered the one problem with digitals.  Storage space.

My camera goes to 8 megapixel.  And being the way I am I would hate to shoot any vacation photos at anything less than full resolution.  If I get a nice photo I want to be able to print a nice, large copy of it.

Now my delima....I will be on vacation for over 2 weeks.  During this time I will have no way to empty my memory sticks.  And at full resolution I use a lot of memory.  I have had to spend almost $400 on memory sticks.  And even with over 1.5 gigs of memory I am still limited to about 400 pics at 8 megapixel.

You may think "Wow! 400 pics is a lot!".  But keep in mind, last time I went on a cruise I was only gone for one week.  I came home with 8 rolls of 24 exposure film to develop.  Thats 192 photos.  And we didn't harldy do anything off of the ship.  This time we have tons of stuff booked for shore excursions.  So I will have to watch how many photos I am shooting and pace myself.  Its not like a film camera where you just buy a roll of film at the next gift shop.

So if you are going to buy a digital camera that goes to a high resolution then stop and think about it first and realise that you will have to figure in the cost of memory at some point.  Especially if you plan on using it for long vacations away from your computer.

But I still love my camera!

dont worry I'm sure soon they will start coming out with memory chips that hold like 50GB worth of pictures. It's only a matter of time.

a few years ago my computer had like 2 gigs of memory and I was all like hell yeah I have a computer.. now I have like 250 gigs and I'm struggling to fill it all.. heh

That is a dilema and that's what's nice about laptops. If you're memory stick gets full, just plop them onto your laptop's hardrive and voila, you have another 400 pics to take.

I can get memory cards up to 2 gig for my camera right now. Also, I do believe that external hard drives may be an option. But money is a factor. These things can get expensive.

I'll be OK for now but I will continue to search for options.

when i had the same problem on my vacation (in the sstates) i just went in to staples and computer stores explained my case and let me use thier computer to burn onto cd. worked great, but you have to count on haveing a store near you and them being generous.

you might want to check this out, scroll down a bit till you see:

belkin media reader

if you're already looking to throw down $400, i would get this and a new ipod. 20gb of portable storage....a little pricey but pretty cool
