Good digital camera?
    #4539148 - 08/15/05 07:37 PM (11 years, 3 months ago)

I am in need of a digital camera money isn't really to much of an object since its going on charge ;o) I heard alot of good things about Nikon Coolpix cameras when OMR asked the same question awhile ago. I was looking at the Coolpix 5200 with 5.1 megapixels. Its $240. I was also looking at the 7200 with 7.1 megapixels. That one was $350. Is the 2 extra megapixels worth the $150 price hike? Anyone have any advice. Is 5megapixels a good quality picture? Any got a camera they could recomend? Thanks.

I have heard that anything above 5MP is a waste unless you plan on blowing up the picture. It's hard to tell the difference in quality if you compare a 5MP pic at 1024x768 resolution versus a 3.2MP at the same resolution. What I take into consideration when thinking about getting a digital camera is how small it is and how long the video you can take with it can be. No one likes carrying around a bulky camera so they usually leave it at home. I want to get a Casio EX-S500:

It's 5.25MP too if that matters. I like it for the size, plus I think it's under $400.

yeah anything above 5.0MP isn't worth the added prize... what i look for in a digital camera is size, roughness (shouldn't break at the first bump) and especially user friendlyness... i have found the casio digital cameras to be pretty good in all 3 of those factors... plus they have a pretty decent prize for the quality you get...

Seems like everyone has a different opinion. I checked out that site FortyOz posted and I can't make up my mind. Anyone else like to chime in? Forty how does that camera do with taking pics of the sky/sunsets? I was reading a review on that cam. and one dude said it had a problem with the white shift? or something and it turned the sky white instead of blue? Never heard of such a thing. That shit can get a pretty technical. Anyways I am glad I just didn't grab that Nikon on impulse when I was in the Circuit city today. I will have to look into it more.

A lot of it depends on what you plan on using it for and how serious you are about photography. I personally don't mind hauling a bulky camera around. But then again, I've been lugging around bulky 35mm cameras for 2 decades and I am into my photography.

When I finally went digital last year I bought the Sony DSC-F828.

It is 8 megapixel and has a lot of versatility. I've been happy with it although it might not be for everyone.

I took this with a Nikon Coolpix5900. I've only had it a few weeks but I like it so far. This is my first digital camera so I don't have anything to compare it to though.

This is our Pitbull "Bruno"

EDIT - I don't know what happened to the pic I posted. I'll find an outdoor pic for you instead though.

I've been happy with my Olympus, but I'd absolutely recommend Nikon for its macro capability if you want to take close in shots, such as flower pics.

Mmmm, Nikon  I've had my eye on the Nikon Coolpix 4500 swivel-body camera for quite some time now. It's quite old, but it is legendary for its macro capability (without additional lenses). It's also very good for connecting to microscope or telescope because of it's fixed objective. Of course there are better cameras out there, but money is an issue in my case, especially considering that digicams around here cost almost twice as much as in the states :undecided: As to megapixels, have a look at http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/mpmyth.htm

Do not get a Pentax - their customer service sucks ass.

I got an Optio WP a few months ago. It went tits up after 3 weeks and has now been in the "shop" for 8 weeks.

I use a ViviCam 3765:

I'm very happy with this camera.
Mainly becuase you can hack it's firmware and make is a 5.0MP camera. But in all honesty if you are a normal picture taker, not a pro, then 3.0 is fine.
