Building your own cloud chamber

Has anyone done this? (qubit, I'm looking in your direction...)  It looks awesome, and pretty easy to do.

I really want to.  I just have to find some dry ice.  I have one of those halogen work lights I hope works for the light.

Actually, it says "Pure (not 70%) isopropyl alcohol" so I wonder if the drug store 98% or whatever will work...

I know here in FL Publix (a grocery store) sells dry ice for $1.50 a lbs.

I would think 90% or higher Iso would work.

Not sure whats in that 10% tho, probably water, if thats the case, if the case gets cold enough, the water should just freeze, and stay at the top while the iso will still vaporize.


But i could be wrong. :shrug:

Man im going to try this tomorrow.

I have a glass 6x12x6 aquarium, vynal tape, 90% Iso, card board, a halogen light, and i can pick up dry ice tomorrow.

Now to find a metal plate, but i have plenty of scrap metal so that will be easy.

Man im kinda excited.

Ill have to break out the camera and make some clips.

ive done this years back after seeing a large one at the exploratorium.

worked beautifuly! definetley worth the few dollars it took to make.

i stepped it up a notch...:evil: i used a peltier junction (sp?) off ebay to replace the dry ice. also used a better solvent... damn i think it was toluene but im not sure. it was nice to have it plugged in instead of buying dry ice :wink:

So I was looking around for some good tips on making one of these (and a good radiation source), and a post on a physics forum got me this: United Nuclear.

They have kits with everything you need to make one, as well as radiation sources (including uranium :awesome:) and awesomely powerful magnets for deflecting particles.

If you are worried about big brother, their FAQ says

...however they were busted by the feds (CPSC to be exact) for selling chemicals that can be used in making illegal fireworks.  The uranium and polonium and other radioactive sources are so small that they wouldn't be useful for much more than scientific research anyway.

I plan on ordering some stuff from them when I get some extra cash.

I have done this, but without the dry ice.

In electronics (parts) stores you can get "Freeze Spray" (first link that came up on Google) which is used to cool down parts of electronic circuits for testing purposes. Spraying this from below against the bottom of the chamber works almost as good, it's a bit more tricky that's all. I used the minute hand of an old alarm clock (Chinese made, in the '50s or '60s I guess) which is coated in a tiny amount of radium as a particle source.

That alarm clock made my geiger counter go wild. Scary to think that people used to sleep for years right next to it.

what would happen if this chamber was placed over a nuclear waste dump?

i ask because there is one public nuclear waste dump in the world, and its right outside of chicago, actually i have visited it a few times....

I've read all about CP-1, Enrico Fermi did a great job making that!

I would imagine you could take the cloud chamber by there and observe some nice tracks.  You could of course take a geiger counter there and see what kind radiation is coming from it.
