Propagating Salvia D
    #1067262 -

When can a salvia d plant be propagated? How big should the cutting be and where should it be taken from on the plant? Pictures would be especially helpful!

You can propagate Salvia D at any time..

When taking a cutting you can use a branch or the main stem for the cutting. In this example the cutting is taken from a branch off the main stem. Its best to cut off the cutting just above a node as this is were the new branches will sprout. Use a small clean sharp blade to cut the cutting.

The example is a rather small cutting but will work well, however, many other growers recommend larger cuttings. Pinch off all but the small leaves near the top. You can also cut some of the larger leafs in half (as shown in the picture below).

Put each cutting into a glass of clean water at about 3 - 5 cm deep. Leave the glass indoors under diffused light. You can change the water frequently to reduce the chances of rotting.

To keep the cutting from wilting you can place it in a party sealed container or in a humidity tent. The example shown was aired daily to prevent stagnant air building up. In about one to two weeks you should see some roots starting to form. With in 3 weeks you should be planting the cutting in loose soil and watered well so that the soil is completely moist.

The donor plant as seen on the left continues to grow happily.

This picture shows the root nodes starting to form.

Nice post as always Salvia England. and that's a neat use for bubble wrap there. neat. I see the plants have the same little brown edges and leaf curl near the tip of the leaf as a sample I have. Is this normal? or caused by overwatering? anyway nice post,

The leaf browning seems to occur when the environment changes, for example, drop in humidity.

so i should cut just above a node with a sharp blade. will new leaves form from where the stem was cut on the original plant? and your telling me that you can just use a single large long stemmed leaf to use as  a propagation? thanks for all the help salviaengland!

new branches grow just above the leaf.

If you cut the main stem above a node, you will get two new stems growing from just below the cut. Make sure the cut is not to close to the node or you may destroy the area, which will produce the new branches.

Make sure you cutting has at least two leafs.

You cannot use a long stemmed leaf to propagate it must have a node to allow new growth.
