Totally agreed with the OP. IMO our society is turning into slavery without us realizing. What is the point of life if you spent 90% of it doing something you don't like? No wonder so many people kill themselves. No wonder so many people really believe there is no purpose in life.

Sure, some among us like me do something they like, but 99% of the population simply doesn't and believes life's a bitch. Why do we live then?

We have 168 hours each week, for the average full-time worker, 40 hours of his time is going to the job, that leaves about 128 hours left over, minus a couple of hours it takes to commute to the workplace. Let's say he gets his full-time 8 hours a night of sleep, that leaves him with 72 hours a week of life left, which has to include all home chores and responsibilities such as providing for food, maintaining the house, laundry, etc.

That's 3 days.

3 days out of 7 each week is free waking life.

Then come to think of the $ we have left for ourselves after rent, mortgage, utilities, insurance, gas, and food..

It's crazy.

The lesson here is clear: don't sleep.

Actually, that's not the lesson. The lesson is: get a job you enjoy with people you like, and make the most of your weekends.

In one way or another work is necessary for survival. It sure doesn't make it any easier that we have tax, debt with interest and slave wages making sure that we have to work longer so that a few people get rich without having to work at all. It is almost impossible for most of us to enjoy life as much as we would like to thanks to modern day slavery. I think what you're saying applies to the majority of people nowadays.

We don't have much of a choice, we can either be a slave, be someone who is fortunate or crafty enough to enslave others or somehow escape from the system. Personally, I prefer the latter but that takes a lot more money than I can seem to get my hands on and if I cannot get enough people to do it with me I will be alone and rob my children of a life.

I spend most of my waking life inside my head, lost in thought.
I suppose you could call that work, certainly it does tire me at times.

I do grunt work for wages, because I don't have to think, simply do. Without any cognitive load, I'm free to lose myself in thought of my choice, and before I realize it the day is done. My only gripe is that time seems to go so quickly.

I get some reconciliation from thinking that the time spent in thought is providing less time spent during school coming up with ideas for research. Like doing an assignment ahead of schedule, and not because you want to complete the assignment early, but because you would do it even if it were not assigned.

Basically, I spend most my time in thought, be it in my spare time or company work time.

99% of the population? Do you enjoy completely fabricating completely off-the-wall bullshit to make it seem like you're supporting your idea?

Of course there is a very valid point to be made here about finding peace while working and doing chores. There is definitely a way to find peace and enjoyment in your work but isn't it also fair to say that it would be nice if you could cut that workday in half and spend the other half of your day hanging out under a big oak tree with the woman you love or doing something else you really enjoy?

Being able to enjoy your work is one thing but allowing yourself to spend more time than should be necessary to support yourself, working day after day for a system of slavery, without a second thought, I mean seriously, have you been brainwashed?

Yea it's a bitch but I sort of beat the system to a small degree. I've rarely worked over twenty five hours a week in my life and often taken whole years off work. Then I retired at 54. Now I just hang and do volunteer work with dogs.

Ive quit 3 jobs before cause summertimes so beautiful, sometimes worrying about the rent just isn't enough of an excuse to piss your life away in an office

In all areas of life we live like this though, happyness is our essential nature but we stray from it for meaningless things, the ramifications of seeing that happyness comes from you, not from outside is so incredible, it feels like the moment i quit those jobs, you break the dependance & needyness & stand as freedom itself

Most people cannot think of a way to create value other than to sell their time at a low price to someone who is more creative and ambitious than they are.

I wouldn't agree with how you voiced this aspect. Frankly, my last job, which I was voluntarily laid off from for being a rabble-rouser, had me being employed by morons who had shit all of an idea what to do about their problems. I knew some of the solutions and reasons personally for some of the company's biggest problems, but due to my low rate of pay I never volunteered such information, with the exception of safety issues. Most of the supervisors only worked as supervisors because they would do the job for such little pay, often experienced workers who would be better suited to the task would say of those positions that they would not do them for that price. I left this place because it became evident that I would be unable to launch a successful lawsuit against them and otherwise they directly did something that was professionally compromising to some of my certifications. Additionally, nepotism was rife, and the site manager had run a similar buisness into the ground but got his job on account of being buddies with the general manager.

Now that was an extreme example of a place where the position of seller of time was not in any way linked to creativity, in fact a lot of people's affluent positions in life are products more of privilege and connections. Creativity is important to actually rise out of poverty but it is nothing without investment capital. I can think of many examples where I could have made shitloads of money off of knowledge I had gained or a creative take on a situation that others did not seem to see. But I had no investment capital and that was that. Similarly I can recall someone recently saying they had investments in some resource future fund but rather than tell them to dump them because something was going to happen I didn't, because they were a douchebag.

I know you can argue that if I fight tooth and nail I can get this capital and invest it, but the privileged or connected can do this effortlessly and in that I think that creativity all together becomes relatively moot as an employer running an already established buisness.

In fact I contend that when it comes to this particular issue Marx wrote the end all of critiques in his book "Capital" where he proclaimed that the poor only have their labor to bring to market and that is why it is sold. He proclaimed that in a society the price of labor was reduced by it's abundance (obvious right) and in his time this was the rule and reality of poverty. Businesses would work their employees for in some cases 15 hour days and they had no time or no space to better their situation, but as well over-working some while leaving others unemployed lowered the price they had to pay for labor by inflating the surplus labor pool, even if they had to pay overtime on the occasion. Is that "creativity" or just plain crooked?

I read somewhere that prehistoric man only spent about 3 hours a day to keep himself fed and sheltered.  I don't have a source for this claim.

I would bet that's an average and likely a presumptuous prediction of some anthropologist at that.
