I think to many people are under the impression that they HAVE to do this their whole life. Some people may never realize there are plenty of alternatives. However, some people really enjoy their work and they wouldn't trade it for anything.

Work is nothing but creating value of some sort that you can trade for whatever you need to live.

The problem is when you assume that you have to do something unpleasant to create value. 

Most people cannot think of a way to create value other than to sell their time at a low price to someone who is more creative and ambitious than they are. 

In North America people customarily sell half their waking time to someone else, five days a week.  Typically no consideration is given to how much value they are actually providing with their work, only with how much compensation they can receive in the 8 hours they've decided to surrender to someone else.

Normally they find absolutely nothing gratifying about producing the kind of value their company sells (insurance, magazines, industrial piping, whatever) so their huge time investment at work provides very little back to them in the way of quality of life, other than their paycheck.

This is the typical arrangement but creative people can find better ways to support themselves than to surrender half their lives to something they dread.

Being creative and marketing a product are two very different skill sets.  Some can do both, most can't. Find someone cool that is good at selling your creativity, forget about it and start producing. :bigblunt:

Good advice.  I think I need a literary agent who can get me a six-figure advance (hah! on the first book?  well, maybeee).  But the production aspect is the most important part, as far as the foundation of the work goes.  If you've made nothing in the first place, then you have nothing with which to display your talents when the marketeer tries to sell you.

some people really like work.  For some reason or another work keeps them satisfied.  My friend's dad is like that.  You give him some work and he is happy.

I read somewhere that prehistoric man only spent about 3 hours a day to keep himself fed and sheltered.  I don't have a source for this claim.

Work keeps you preoccupied, so you don't have to think about anything.

Speak for yourself.

My answer to creativity, is being frugal and living with less. Wealth is in experiences and relationships, not material things.

Working is a way to provide for oneself material things, or distract oneself from reality.

I prefer to have few things and play in reality. I hope to spend the time throughout my life in better ways than working, whenever possible.

Obviously, i want things, comfort, transportation, security and some luxury - but i think possessing smart consumption habits allows one to work less.

That said, being frugal is only one part of the equation. Being smart with your money, + making your money work for you is another..
