Artists
    #1054114 - 11/15/02 12:22 AM (14 years, 4 months ago)

I was just thinking, it seems as though a lot of artists take a liberal, pacifist, or leftist stance on political issues. Of course there are exceptions, but it seems as though the majority lean in this direction. Anyone have any sort of answer?

"paint-by-numbers" artists probably don't have this tendancy.

Good question Phluck, but difficult to answer with certitude.

If I were to make a guess I would say because the artist's mind leans towards creativity and less towards analytic thought. Certain cognitive 'types' are drawn into certain fields of knowledge. For example you will find more conservatives in the fields dealing with hard sciences, especially mathematics. It is a documented fact that most ham radio operators are conservative. That hobby deals with numbers and calculations and attention to detail which is found in people that enjoy it.

I view it this way because my attraction to science and scientific fields, like mycology, make me more of a conservative bent while the creative side of me like my love of poetry and music makes me more liberal. The political test I took here rated me as a centrist, right in the middle.

That's my guess.

Cheers,

Artistic/Creative types tend to be more "empathetic" to human "suffering" and "idealistic" in believing that social architecture can cure all of mankind's woes, as to why this is I'm not sure, but it probably has to due with the requisite imagination and empathy required to function in the arts.

I don?t really understand it, but I have experientially witnessed this behavior. I have a degree in fine arts. I was a working artist for a number of years, and I was very active in my local arts community, and those people drove me just about as nuts as social conservatives do. I?m sort of middle of the road -- I don?t trust anybody!

I don't think it's all that crazy stuff.

Maybe, like, being able to call themselves
'artists' and not, like, have a day job. Like,
what allowed them to be professional artists
was the benefits of the modern welfare state
or whatever. Left-wing cultural funding let
them not have to work at a gas station, maybe.
That's mostly in Canada and other civilized
countries with that kind of cultural funding stuff.
People who call themselves 'artists,' like
professional ones, all came from the upper
middle class or some privileged background.

Radical politics are cool, too. People from
upper middle class backgrounds go to the
universities and learn about all that stuff.

There's other stuff, too, maybe. And maybe
most artists aren't really left-leaning. Maybe
a lot are, but not most. Maybe most of the
ones you get to hear talking are.

John Lennon voted Tory, though. Secretly!

It's cool to be liberal in coffee shops with other artists. When your friends are also poor and you think about how things could seem more fair. Sitting around smoking pot and talking politics... It's cool to be liberal and eccentric, and it doesn't matter because afterall everyone is in some way, a little weird. Pipe dreams and manic idealism which will never be realized are typical traits among young artists.

Let's take a look at actors as an example, why people would choose to go into a profession where the unemployment rate is so high, where the chances of being gainfully employed are so dismal? Their minds are heavily into fantasy, they think that prosperity can be conjured out of thin air like in a movie script, they are under the delusion that their concept of utopia would be welcomed by all others.

To call humans 'rational beings' does injustice to the term, 'rational.'  Humans are capable of rational thought, but it is not their essence.  Humans are animals, beasts with complex brains.  Humans, more often than not, utilize their cerebrum to rationalize what their primal instincts, their preconceived notions, and their emotional desires have presented as goals - humans are rationalizing beings.

Morrowind, bivalve makes a very good point. Sure, there's always anecdotal evidence to the contrary, but he's definately right that most artists come from the wealthier/better educated segment of society. Art isn't very blue collar.

nice try.

When talent calls... the smart person follows it. No matter where it takes you, its for some reason that is important to you. I am an artist and I think your view of artists as delusional fantisizing fools is ignorant. I have started my own company and am doing fairly well...... while holding another job and still taking fulltime classes in my senior year at college. So perhaps you should reevaluate your idea.

As for the politics in art... i believe that a more liberal stance in artists stems from a more balanced Self. Being able to express yourself emotionally is feminine by nature...I am not ashamed to say that art has brought the feminine up to par with the masculine in my life. Thats the model of the balanced individual (amongst everything else)... the yin and the yang.... SO... my argument is that many artists are more in touch with their emotional side and able to express it more openly... as in politics. Im very liberal... and very proud of it.

p.s. this is why so many people have the idea that artists are gay... yes there are homosexual artists... but no more than homosexual business men.. its just that art allows the person to come to terms and express that more openly.

p.s.s... no im not gay.
