Thanks shroomzey, maybe you're right, but do you have any links to support this? Everything I've read says 84-86 is optimal.

I just went to the local grow shop, looking for perlite to fill the bottom of my fruiting chamber. They only had perlite mixed with verm. I told them what it was for, and they said that the perlite/verm mix would be ideal as verm has the same water holding properties as perlite. Is this true, and will I be ok using a verm/perlite mix instead of pure perlite??

Thanks in advance.

just get perlite from a farm supply company.

no need to mix it with verm

Yeah totally, I know pure perlite would be ideal, but I'm wondering if a perlite/verm mix would be sufficient. If its no good, I could travel in search of pure perlite, but obviously would prefer not to.

Perlite cannot support contams, wet verm can.  Find some perlite, just call different nursery's in your area, i'm sure one of them carries it.

Thanks man, thats the kind of info I was looking for. I'll go in search of perlite.

Ok, my cakes are getting close. Growth is still moving fast with no visible contams, WOOHOO!!

One of them is completely covered with mycellium (no substrate visible) but the others have little corners etc still to go. So I guess they'll be ready to fruit in 1.5 - 2 weeks.

I'm all set for fruiting, I was able to find perlite and have everything I need. Heres how the cakes look:

I've also started a second batch. About 2 weeks ago I inoculated 7 cakes in tumbler glasses (was supposed to be 6 but I had leftover mix!). They are much smaller sized than the first batch, so will colonise nice and quickly. Its from the same sporeprint (Equador). Again, the myc is growing like crazy, after 1.5 weeks it has covered 50-75% of some cakes, except for one which is at about 30%. Heres a pic:

Great job! If I were you i would seriously consider casing those tho. Casing is much better for yield and that's what the purpose of growing is, Yield! Ha. It's not much harder then what you doing now anyway. If you still want to continue the PF Tek style thats fine, but I really recommend trying to case that second batch you have colonizing. Also you should try spawning to a bulk substrate. This is another easy way to increase your yield. Just use the search function and type in "spawn run" or "bulk spawn" and you'll find tons of pages full of information. Goodluck! Keep up the good work.

Thanks mate, yeah I'm definitely going to try casing soon. I was thinking about casing my first batch - I did some reading up on it, but  decided to play it safe and do at least 1 successful grow first. Then I can move on to more advanced techniques like casing, bulk spawning etc

Its on! Today I put my cakes in the fruiting chamber. I dunked them for 24 hours, rolled in verm etc... I just followed the standard tek so theres no need for more detail.

The cakes shrunk by around 1/4, so they weren't as massive as I had originally expected. They are about the same height as a lighter, and cube shaped.

These cakes took almost 2 months to fully colonise! Although some colonised faster than others, I probably could have fruited some of them a week or two ago. But I decided to wait until they were all 100%, so I fruit them all at once.

The verm didn't stick to the cakes that well... not sure why, maybe the verm I have is too coarse. So the verm coating is a bit patchy. I'm guessing its not essential to have an even coating, right?

Well not much else to tell. No visible contams, FC is at 96% humidity... now comes the waiting game!

oh, my smaller cakes are doing fine too. Pretty close to 100%.

If anyone has any tips and comments on my setup, please let me know.

Looks very nice

Have you rolled dry or wet cake onto vermiculite? I always do it with wet cake and never have such problems. Although I think it will be completely fine
And make sure you moisten the vermiculite afterwards

Now just hope for a big flush :P

When I did the roll, the cakes were wet and the verm was dry.

Yeh I'm hoping to get a decent flush out of these, we'll see!

ok, no fruits yet, but there is activity at least. The cakes have developed 'pins', although they don't look exactly like I expected, they are kind of uneven and lumpy. Here are some pics:

Temperatures have been between 61-65, and humidity is showing as 99%. There is always some fog/condensation on the inside of the chamber. I've been fanning & misting minimum 3 times a day.

Is this looking ok and normal?? I'd really value some opinions.

You'll notice put in 4 of the smaller cakes today too.

I believe those white lumps of mycelium are called "hyphal knots" and will be developing into pins shortly. That's what happened with my first grow here.

Buddy, first off, your doing good so far, but a few things come to mind:
First I would get that shotgun off the floor with a drip pan and some spacers to keep it up off the drip pan about 2-3 inches.  Its the airflow all around the chamber that gives you that nice FAE.  I use 4 1/2 pint jars to keep my shotgun up off the drip pan, and then the whole thing is on a table about 2 feet off the ground.  The first foot or so is where most contams float around, or so I hear...  Tho of course they are everwhere...

Second, your cakes look kinda cramped, not really a big issue at all, but it might be a pain come harvest time.  No worries.

im kinda stoned, how long have these cakes been in the shotgun?  You might need to water your perlite, now I know RR says it will last for ages once you put it in there, but Ive had mine dry out quik before for no apparent reason (probly low RH in the room) and saw noticeable difference after re-hydrating my perlite.  Just a thought...

Overall, nice work, and good luck!

They are not pins and they are also not hyphal knots. Hyphal knots are easily recognized as tiny looking pins, tiny white dots, not fuzzy at all.

What you have there is mycelium fluffing up. To my understanding its from high RH; I have had them on several cakes and nothing negative has ever resorted from them; although I have never had that happen on any casings.

Good luck!  :rabbitgull:

:rabbitgull::rabbitgull::rabbitgull:  (i had to)

I agree, those lumps are not pins, or pre-pins (some could be) but more mycelial tumors/lumps.  They are perfectly normal, and your cakes are looking good.  Give it a few more days of good fae and humidity, and you will be swimming in shrooms!
