I have to agree with this one.
I dont have the sufficient amount of information as you do , being that i gave up on reading this stuff as soon as i realized the glitches , and since i have been focused on them.
I also think i lack the rhetoric skill ..
But you seem to have experience in arguing these issues and in general , i couldnt agree more on almost all of your posts in this thread.
People tend to extract little tid bits and argue against them instead of addressing the core point .. when there are no more lingual misunderstandings , or grammatical inadequacies , sadly it does get off topic even more and become personal.

Quote:
actually it isnt just psychology i rail against... there are a few threads on here where i slam modern medicine as well.

Truthfully.. slamming one with out the other would be contradictory.
They come hand in hand..

You also have to mix in economics and politics with that..it wont take long to understand that psychology .. or its sub fields (makes no difference to me ) is pure business.

It really is all about money.. and controlled regulation of the populace through this fraudulent science.

There is plenty of evidence to observe and it will undoubtedly bring one closer to a similar conclusion.

Im not saying its out to get you !
But im not saying its actually out there to help you either..
It is your own free will when you decide to go to a shrink.. or to study this..
But.. certain people get this free will deprived when their mental state is evaluated as ABnormal ,(possibly dangerous to other people) and that does mean that a certain NORM must exist , and that must mean that another authority gets to decide this.

So we naturally have to ask the question whether this authority exhibits normal or abnormal behavior in the first place.
Its sort of like the chicken and egg thing.. that culminates in the realization that no norm can be postulated no matter how many people actually fit into it.
Only one individual is enough to break the alleged axiom.

To remind once more of my initial response - This has to be an exact science.
Were dealing with uncharted territory basically when we play god with the brain , and to prematurely execute some of these theories and conduct experiments , let alone make it into a legitimate practice with such authority.. it seems absurd to me.

The reason why i pointed out the fact that experimental psychology didnt really start playing a significant role in society until the middle of 20th century >> was to make an analogy with the development of modern societies.

As the structure becomes more complex.. violence as means of persecution cannot be excercised anymore so a subtle , quasi scientific model of human behavior is presented.
It keeps the rebels at bay ... and most people dont even get to become rebels in fear that they will end up alienated from the people in their abnormal "insane" behavior.

What approach do you perceive psychology to be taking?

Your examples were extremely Freudian in nature, and as has been discussed a few times in this thread, really have no merit in psychology today. So if anything, that would say the field is moving away from what you seem to take issue with, not deeper into. That's why I ask what direction you see psychology taking.

Further, you say psychology is not a science. What do you base this off of?

I need expansion of the ideas, or else it's so open ended I could be responding in entirely the wrong direction.

Well I only gave one example, but I could really argue with any psychological study. If a theory doesn't apply to everyone, I consider it to be almost useless (I only use the word almost because I recognize that certain aspects of therapy can be helpful to some people, but as far as understanding how the mind works, psychology does not... and will never... come close).

Freud's ideas were once believed whole-heartedly to be true by a very large number of people until they were proven wrong. It's my view that every new psychological theory is just being set up to be knocked down to the same ends once we figure out how things ACTUALLY work... if that ever happens.

I say psychology is not a science because even though "experiments" may go through the scientific method, the interpretation of what the experiments show is completely subjective. This is the reason I believe the majority of psychological theories to be hoo ha

I'm amazed at how people misjudged things they don't really know, and it's even more amazing that, when asked, they can't give specific, clear, well defined examples to support their cause, preferring to stay in an ambiguous shade. I'm not saying that your intentions are bad, but that getting a little more informed before you speak, because it could greatly increase the quality of the discussion.

Do you have any theory in mind, specifically?

Psychological theories, just like theories developed on any other science, are part information and part speculation, this is why they have this name, and not laws. Of course, a theory might apply more or less to an individual, and this is probably because the problem he finds himself into addresses to more than one single formed theory regarding a specific disorder.
A theory gives directions based on what has been observed, and the rest depends on the skill of the therapist - how much he is able to make the connections with other theories, practice, results of studies and experiments, empathy, etc.

It is a logical fallacy to think that, since in the past some psychological theories have been debunked, the same thing will happen on and on. Surely, some of them will change, refine, re-vise, but so did and will do any other theories from physics, medicine, etc.

I dont really think its necessary.
While you compare psychology to other sciences , you seem to miss one crucial point >>

A Mind.. is observing another mind.
I can label your behavior all i want.. and compare it to the rest of humans.. but inevitably my judgment would be clouded by my personal interpretation - of you.. and the others i am comparing you to.

IMO this is not a valid basis for a science that is so widely accepted to the point where its research is embedded within the LAW.
While you have the ability to differentiate between theory and "Law" .. it seems as though you lack the same to recognize how much subjective experience and reasoning has hierarchical properties within modern society.
Im right - you're wrong.
Im a psychiatrist - you're mentally unstable
Im a judge ; i think the psychiatrist is right (probably because we share opinions) -

Agreed jivjan^

In all honesty, I am far too lazy to do the legwork and find a bunch of examples to support my claim that a lot of psychological studies rely a lot more heavily on speculation than information. You and I both know such examples exist... psychology involves a lot of guesswork, anyone can see that.

I was just weighing in my opinion that psychology has its flaws, and you can take it or leave it... it's just my opinion. So no, I'm not really interested in going into further detail

It's always a mind looking at any experimental data. The data is ALWAYS interpreted. And that data does effect the world surrounding you, sometimes more directly than others.

I just don't understand why some of you feel this distinction is so important for psychology.

But I'd much rather it have some objective, scientific base, than the previous, completely subjective experiential reasoning of organized religion. If you believe there is no difference between the two, then I don't think the conversation should continue, as we will never see eye to eye.

Cuz its a big NO NO to mess with the brain unless you're really sure about it.
We're all into psychedelics here i presume.
I've had some really intense experiences myself , and would concur that mental anguish is far greater than any physical pain can be.

We're basically dealing with emotions. Something we have yet to define - if we ever do, that is.

I think i can talk to plants , animals , aliens , higher dimensional life forms etc.
Your science.. says im delusional.. schizophrenic.
In all honesty.. if i were to actually tell a therapist everything thats on my mind.. she would say : Hold on just one minute..  -- then leave the room to make a phone call and  come back with two big dudes to take my ass away in fear that i will strangle her with the phone cord.
And yet.. i am here talking to you.
And to all the other people out there that have NO IDEA what im about.
Im here.. telling you.. that most of you out there are actually insane.
Not me.

Do you get it now ?
What do YOU think it would be like.. if i gave you pills to make you have lucid dreams ?
If i said you cant work here.. cuz you're not telepathic. Up in this bitch we all use telepathy... cuts down on the phone bill..

The science of psychology is really not related to what you're discussing, IMO, at all.

I know, I did.

You brought up hierarchies in society. Religion is such a hierarchy. In times now past, it was much more so. That's why I felt it was relevant.

Quote:
Cuz its a big NO NO to mess with the brain unless you're really sure about it.

If you're referring to psychology, and not psychiatry, I'm not sure why you feel that it's messing with the brain any more than any other occurrence in life. You are free to choose what you believe, what you interpret as fact, and what you experience. Nothing about someone listening to you, and offering reflective techniques is going to change that. Nor is someone asking for their behavior to change, and the psychologist laying that out in a plan of action, which is based on experimental data, before you ever engage in it. This is so you can judge for yourself if you buy it. If you do not believe that plan will succeed, then great, that's why the informed consent exists. You are free to decide if you buy into the ideas or not.

No one is messing with your brain, but you. It's your choice. Just as it is your choice to take psychedelics and see where that leads, so is it your choice to engage in therapy if you so desire.

As I've stated before, there are exceptions. These exceptions are present in society, regardless of context. If you're saying you're going to hurt someone in a therapy session, yes, the therapist is obligated to take you seriously, and inform anyone who might be in danger, and also notify the police of the possibility. That's practical, and I do not find it unrealistic. If you were threatening me outside of the therapy setting, the reaction might be different, but there are still going to be consequences for such an action.

Likewise, if you're trying to hurt yourself, society frowns upon that. It's not acceptable, regardless of whether psychology weighs in or not.

Quote:
In all honesty.. if i were to actually tell a therapist everything thats on my mind.. she would say : Hold on just one minute..  -- then leave the room to make a phone call and  come back with two big dudes to take my ass away in fear that i will strangle her with the phone cord.

Why do you believe this? I don't know what all you believe, but unless you told the therapist you were going to try and strangle her with a phone cord, I don't see why that impression would form. And this is from someone who has participated in therapy, has training in therapy, and likely holds many beliefs similar to your own.

Quote:
Do you get it now ?

No, I don't. A therapist is not trained to judge you. They are trained to do the exact opposite! To listen, reflect, and engage you in dialogue that allows you to understand yourself. Interpretations are only presented when it is felt that sufficient signs have been presented, and you're willing to hear it -- a therapist can very well be wrong, and it is the client who should say "no, that's not right" and the therapist will re-assess. The danger of authority is present. But a therapy session should, ideally, and what they trained me to do, is allow the clients ideas to dictate the sessions, and not the therapists. Therapists should not divulge opinions, because that takes away the freedom of the client to freely to express their own opinions without feeling contradictory to an authority figure. If that goes on long enough, hopefully the client doesn't feel pressured in saying "no" if the therapist proposes an explanation. No good therapist will propose an explanation before a relationship with a client has been developed. And you may even go through the entirety of therapy without the therapist ever needing to present an explanation, the reflection alone is enough to allow the client to analyze themselves.

Quote:

Again, I'd rather it have an objective, scientific base, than not.

P.S. I don't want this to be taken the wrong way, but, I appreciate these dialogues very much.

They serve a multitude of purposes for me:
  • To reinforce my knowledge by having it called into question.

  • To see if psychology has risen to a lot of these criticisms, and it seems in most cases it has. The criticisms are great, and without them, a lot of progress in the field would not have occurred. I've consented on more than a few, agreeing with posters that these are very serious issues worthy of criticism. I'm inside the field, working for change. But a lot of these criticisms seem misplaced to me.

  • To see where posters stand on the issues, and experience how effective psychology has been in allowing therapeutic techniques to be understood. It seems they've been piss poor actually :tongue2:

  • Allow others to get a better feel for my philosophical standings, since this is my area of expertise.

So why did psychiatrists/ologists stop implementing the therapeutic use of MDMA in their psychotherapy sessions with patients? :waits:

But certainly there are some who fear it. My clinical psych professor is woefully uninformed about psychedelics and their prior role in psychology (despite living through the period) and I have found myself correcting her about their history in psychology...

That was the only point I observed, and I addressed it with that statement. What point was I missing?

And if you disagree, please explain why, rather than saying I'm not addressing your points.

that was a part of my point, but my primary point was the following actions that are taken in the name of scientific experiment when there is nothing concrete about the conclusions. Ultimately, i have no problem with psychology beyond its facade of science, because after all, in the subjective realm of you saying psychology does good, and someone else saying it is damaging we can look at it and say that in a non-biased perception of psychology, it has X amount of potential... and I think that psychology has no potential whatsoever.
IMO, it is pretty much benign. some could argue that time and money spent on such pursuits are damaging, but I believe that one must take risks in the pursuit of happiness in this day and age.

It has nothing to do with new information coming into the forefront... we arent talking about the discovery of new phenomena... we are talking about common sense. If pavlov discovers that he can make dogs salivate with a tone, and thus spawns thousands of pages of theories for years to come, yet thorndike teases cats with salmon which spawns thousands of pages of theories in direct opposition to pavlovs study... then what new information was introduced?
and how does any of this correlate to human interaction?
i mean, should we call the evolution of the game "2 for flinching" a scientific study since when threaten with a fist everyone eventually flinches? why is one so groundbreaking and the other never mentioned?

I guess basically my question is: how can it be considered science when the end result is a gray area open to interpretation?
science is used to prove cause and effect... and i guess my problem with a great deal of modern "science" is that we are only observing effect which leads to such myopic logic as if B is a function of A then A is the cause of B... which is just plain wrong.

also, here is a thought...

science is generally unable to even keep such huge amounts of chaotic variables in mind: like society.
society evolves (or devolves) and even if these theories were factual they would never be a law.. because a law denotes that it is true forever (like the law of gravity).
is it possible that psychology is doomed to constantly keep saying "you know this old stuff is bullshit and wrong, this new stuff works!" since society will constantly change and as society changes, so will human interaction, perception, and conditioning?
is that something you want to be a part of? a group of people trying to tackle some extremely dynamic, amorphous abstract variable with you caught in the middle as a lab rat?

I agree with YawningAnus here, but I'd go even further than just agreeing...

Psychology and medicine are not only heavily flawed, they surpress the body and soul. Instead of curing people from their mental illness, we lock them up in straightjackets. Instead of curing people from their physical illness, we give them medicine so they become dependant.

Every single medicine that is tested, is tested against placebo. Meaning, placebo always works. The body can heal itself. Many people have placebo'ed right out of cancer and even AIDS. 33% of the russians are immune to AIDS. Medicine weakens the immunity system.

Every single AD is also tested against placebo. Because placebo always works. AD's prevent the mind from going back to it's natural chemical balance. AD's make you dependant, they lock you in a certain state of mind. They prevent your brain from creating the needed hormones yourself.

Psychology and medicine are evil, they are the devils work, they are destroying our society.  Wilhelm Reich agreed with this, the guy who came up with the body language theory was simply locked up and put in jail and died in jail for his beliefs. If further interested in this topic, people should read his works.
