Psychology as a whole- Do you buy it?
    #10242623 -

I am taking psychology in college and I feel like there is a lot of truth to psychology, but at the same time I feel as though it is intended for people that want to fit the "normal" spectrum of society.

Just from the way psychology talks about marijuana and psychedelics, shows me that they don't know everything and they have their biases.  Also the fact is that psychology is a business just like anything else. But I do not deny that there are good psychologists out there that I am sure help people better their lives.

what do you th in k ? :yinyang:

I think psychology is a discipline that is divided.

On one side there are scientific and research oriented psychologists who study things in a methodical nature, and come up with models and paradigms that describe and predict (to some extent) human behavior.  These models can be used to help people as you say, and increase our wisdom about the human experience.

On the other side are spiritualists and mystics who I think bring the discipline down.  They are the reason psychology isnt taken as seriously as it should be by overshadowing real research with their nonsense.  For some reason psychology attracts these kinds of people, but fortunately the required statistics class usually prevents them from getting a degree.

I think Psychology is--by and large--on to something. I for one am very pleased with the direction the field has taken in the past few decades, as biological processes are becoming ever more important, going as far as to overshadow any of the competing paradigms. IMO, anything that we wish to understand psychologically should be firmly grounded in physiological processes. Of course, such is easier said than done, but that's the beauty of science.

Haha, interesting perspective on the whole thing.
I agree, it does attract the spiritually and mystically minded individuals. And I vehemently disagree that they are what brings the discipline down.

It depends on where you stand. But without the spiritual/mystically minded individuals, a lot of our theories wouldn't have evolved to where they are currently at. There is no rule that says you can't practice science if you believe in a spirit. Rogers was deeply spiritual, and he made incredible contributions to the scientific side of clinical psychology.

I actually find the views of Skinner, someone who IMO represents a lack of spirituality to be the most dogmatic. When cognitive ideas were first coming into being, he HATED them. Really really despised them, and wanted nothing to do with the ideas being presented. Now, we have a nice blending of cognitive-behavioral therapies which are some of the most effective and wide spread therapies around.

I think what holds psychology down is the stigmatization attributed to those who receive a diagnosis. We've got a history of horrible treatment for those with mental illness.

Who is they? Psychology doesn't belong to them and they are not the last word on anything.

You are the best psychologist you will ever know. So get out there and work out your own salvation.

it attempts to draw clear definitions about health as either good or bad, it tries to be objective about subjective conditioning

Where do these ideas come from?

Psychology makes no claim as to the 'goodness' or 'badness' of an individuals health.
Psychology identifies a pattern. Society determines if that pattern is adaptive or not.
If it is not adaptable, psychology offers ways to shift the pattern. In most cases, that is an optional decision. When you endanger another or yourself, yes, society steps in and you lose your choice.

As for the subjective conditioning part... what subjective conditioning does it try to be objective about?

If LSD is used regularly for psychological sessions, then eventually, perhaps we won't have a need for therapists.

psychology uses health as an anchor
otherwise there is no purpose to the study
and its like the day mom wore dads pants philosophically speaking

As much as I appreciate and respect Tim Leary, there is no way I'd ever have tripped with him.  OK, well, maybe.

Social psychology couldn't give two shits what your mental health status is (except for ethical considerations in experimentation). And yes, there is purpose for the knowledge. It seems like you have a very stereotyped view of psychology.

The only area that is concerned with health, is aptly named, health psychology. It's more of a holistic view of health as being influenced by the mind and body both.

Mental health fits a lot more, but not nearly all.

I do not feel comfortable having a philosophical discussion of psychology with someone who isn't well versed in it. Probably due to my own knowledge and subsequent need for specifics and not sweeping generalizations.
