my sclerotia are like 3 in long and 1 in 3 in thick in the biggest cases and they are holding all the soil in the jars a rather solid mass to the point where i have to break it up with a knife.

Well keep your fingers crossed.

metalhead said:
any way do you think it's where sclerotia has grown and engulfed a root?

Its possible.

somthing i found interestin in all the wild sclerotia i found on the bottom of morels none of it is orangeish it is all white/morel flesh colored.

This may have something to do with that "secondary mycelium" that has been mentioned in the life cycle.

Or it could just be new growth.

Another thing, the stem bases / root base, sometimes they can be really white when its fairly dry and sometimes if there has been a cold rainy period for some time, the stems get yellowish as if they have become waterlogged.

I think that is a good indicator of how much water has been present in the environment.

damn ah every time i put up a post you are off again!

any way it was raining when i found it and had been raining the day before so.. i cut it open too and it was plain white with little dirt particles built in. it made me think mabee just mabee could morels form from strait myc. no sclerotia? i find 2 morels there every year in the same spot close to the same date and there is little or nothing at the base that looks like sclerotia mabee a little button the size of a pencil eraser on the bottom of the stem where sclerotia are. they are black morels by the way and there are no trees and little plant growt close to the morel they always are small like 11/2in tall and 1/2 in wide ... what is your take on this?

Oooooh they are connected to a sclerotium for sure. But the situation arises that the connection breaks too easy and sometimes
there just isn't enough growth to tell how far down it is. The morel I have up there and its "root" I believe there was more to it still
I just couldn't follow the path of growth due to it being so brittle and the ground breaks up so easily.

Nope. Because I've had them like that too.

Ok here we go. I described a long time ago to a few that were on here a lot about the "York Peppermint Pattie".

And here is a photo of it

I look at the worm like or root like, extremely dense mycelium or sclerotium appendage of this morel, and the only thing that
comes to mind is "York Peppermint Pattie". And on a scale of unbreakable to breakable its as breakable as a York Peppermint Pattie.

If you don't have sclerotia that are that dense and are not capable of holding the dirt together just like that, then you don't have sclerotia.

Let me also add that when I found the extremely huge yellow morels with huge root bases that were near, next to, or on top of the roots of large trees, I found this kind of growth underneath the ground under the morel and was the size of a baseball.

AAAAAAH  I  cant fucking wait til I can dig up some of them! :crazy2::mushroom2:

i still think the root was sclerotia engulfing a root and thriving off the nutrients. and i dug the whole thing up and separated the dirt from the base and it was all that was there. all the blacks i find have big masses of orangish sclerotia so idk about the one i was discussing.

And those blacks were the size of your pinky finger and morels that small whether they are yellow or black don't always have a large dense growth underneath in the ground below them. Only when they get larger do you really see these things. Sometimes the small do get one
and sometimes they don't and the ones that don't may be connected just with a single hypha. Yet those are the ones that don't grow
any larger than an inch.

i think we aught to figure out what is up with your morel cuz i have never seen anything like that before wash off the sand from the root thing and see if there is a root or anything in it if not than we will know it's some sort of weird sclerotia formation possibly originally attached to a bigger mass of sclerotia underground. what do you think about that?

LOL, no way I have a plan on trying to extend its development. Morels are notoriously known for their loss of moisture.

I have done that before with these and the tissue is somewhat like that of the stem, only with heavier fuzzy hyphae growth.

Yep, wouldn't that be cool if I figured out how to keep its growth going? Even after being picked?

Water retention. And what could you use to help that?

But the organism needs a nutrient source, with nutrients like the ones stored up in the sclerotia.

All further growth will be conducted in the refrigerator.

Why the fridge?

Because the average low has been down around 30 to 35 °F when these blacks were growing, and a fridge is at 46°F just in a crisper.

Water retention? Ever had tequila? Lemons taste good but you need something else.

use a verm based substrate in high humidity it's a long shot but i suppose it's possible.

High humidity will cause them to shoot spores or turn to goo. That's not an option.

you know i was thinking of the mose probable way of getting these things to fruit and i have come up with 2 possibilities 1. a variation of the elm seedling method only indoors in a controlled invirnment or 2.forming sclerotia outdoors to obtain good size and moving to indoors. what do you think of the two ideas?

Sounds like possible paths.

That's what I'm trying to get at with using potato slices. If you want to grow a potato plant you have to cut a half potato with an eye on it and plant it. The wet surface of the slice can be inoculated with morel spores.

As the potato plant grows, watch the growth of the morel mycelia.

Salt causes cells to retain water.

i see where you are coming from but idk about using salt i know it also preservs tissue but if you over do it you are going to have a pickeled morel of sorts...
