Coffe casing.
    #10058495 -

Hello.

I recently incoulated some straw bags with ecuador and I am planning to do some bulk grow.

Now, I had this idea to use coffe as a casing layer. Is this possible? Anyone actually done this?

I left some used coffegrinds to dry and it picks up contamination really easily. I already have some yellow spots and white mold on it.

I know that this should be sterilized good, but when to actually do this? And do I need to take special measures when casing? I really don't want this thing to pick up any contaminations.

now I know people here use coffee as a "substrate" or part of a substrate mix,but as a casing layer my knowledge would tell me thats a bad idea, as the coffee is full of "food" for the myc, in which it would keep growing and spread all over the casing. Your casing wants to be non-nutricious i.e peat moss /verm mix, just so it holds a lot of water to help with pinning.

I could be wrong, check a few more posts and see first.

Also coir as a casing is a no no. and its also nice mushroom "food"

You want to avoid using anything with nutrients as a casing, if you do you're just begging contams to settle on it and grow, mucking up your grow.

I ran out of casing mix, so I pasteurized some potting soil and used it.  Wish I hadn't, mofo turned green pretty quickly.

Your best bet is 50/50+ (verm, peat, lime).

thats a horrible idea. you can use spent coffe grounds as an additive to your casing layer but you cant just use pure coffe. plus you said its already got mold on it.. what are you thinkin' man. hahah

Never use coffee as a casing.  It will be green long before first flush.
