Why would the top of casing layer contaminate?

Three pans of casings were dooped to being victims of green mold contamination only two weeks after being put in terranium. The thing that is very hard to follow:

Why would the top of the casing layer be a victim to contamination? I thought the peat moss and verm mix had little to no nutrition. Where would the contamination get its nutrients? Anno...do u know? :smile:

you didnt sufficiently pasturize.

boil for 2 hours at 140* degrees.

Peat moss isn't exactly non-nutritive.

But straight vermiculite is.

If you're gonna use casing mixtures with any nutritive value, pasteurize.

Don't boil (212F) pasteurize (~160F)

People can say that straight verm is non-nutritious all they want. It still contaminates. More likely with cobweb than trich, but trich will still hit it too. In the absence of any nutrition, contams can always eat mycelium as well as it's metabolic wastes. Not to mention that you don't need much "food" at all for contams. I mean, what nutrients is a ceramic tile shower made out of? It certainly propogats molds and mildews just fine given the right conditions.

I have a PC , how would I know if the temp isn't gonna be at 240C and not 140? Is there a way to make sure its pasturized and not too hot?

A thermometer in a pressure cooker? I cant open the pot once its steaming hot. Its not posible to check the temperature that way....What is the usual way to pasturize casing guys? I always hear about putting casing in a pressure cooker, but there is not temp checker on there anyway? Whats the deal...?

I think he was refering to boiling it in a pot of water rather than pressure cooking.

hey roadkill if u happen to read this thread one more time, i'd appreciate it....i wanted to know what u think about getting the casing mix, putting it in oven bag and pressure cooking in about 2 hours? does this seem right? has your friend's friend been doing it in a similar fasion?

no problem at all

I bake my casing stuff in the oven....sorry

350 degrees for 2 hours.....then i add water when needed.

no contams yet.....*crosses fingers*

LOL, im worried about 214 degree overkill when im told to pasturize at 140 but you do it at 350 for two hours? Okay, i dont need to worry about this stupid question anymore...I'll just try a little bit at first with a test...gotta stop bothering to put questions that ill soon find the answer to anyway. pasteurize in the PC... WITHOUT the lid, I have a very large pressure cooker, it also serves as a very large POT, ideal for stuffing a pillowcase full of 'whatever' for pastuerizing... the candy thermometer easily 'clips' onto the side.
