True, the purpose of the casing layer is not to feed the mushrooms but to create a suitable microclimate and environment for the growth of mushrooms. But it appears as the mycelium spreads through the casing some exchange is taking place. An example might be using composted dung as your substrate where no casing layer is needed . As for contaminants after pasteurization of any casing your contaminants are usually externally intoduced or lying dormant in your substrate. Anyway, I like the Gardens Alive! coir product because it is already finely sifted and ready for use. After years of picking sticks out of peat it seemed a nice option.
