Re: Contam'ed Casing from Top Layer not being Deep Enough?

The thickness of the casing does not determine if it will get contaminated or not. It does affect the size of the harvest you will get, the health and size of future flushes and the amount of time to pin set in the first flush. The thicker the casing the more shrooms (and larger shrooms) it can support. I prefer to go with atleast 1-inch of casing...but often use as much as 1-1/2-inch of casing.

The contamination you are seeing is often associated with under sterilized/under pasturized casing or a casing that has been subjected to contamination after it is placed on the substrate. Be sure to sterilize your casing properly initially and be sure that your air exchanges are filtered in some fashion. Reframe from touching your casing often (like when watering). Good Luck.

Yeah, generally 1-1.5 inches works very well for a casing layer. It does sound like you had a sterilization problem. I don't know how you prepped it, but just be a little more carefull with air exposure, etc. Good luck & happy harvests

I guess I'll have to sterilize my casing next time... but why is it that the majority of people here *don't* sterilize and have relatively few problems? It just ain't fair!!

Using the 50/50 tek, how would I sterilize? You sterilize the soil and/or verm dry, correct? Then what?

Thanks for the info, guys.
